Hythe Town 2 Whitstable Town 3
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Tuesday 3rd March 2015
Whitstable Town took all three points in a 3-2 thriller at Hythe Town on Tuesday night.
Whitstable started very brightly in the first half but it was Sam Bewick who had the first opportunity for Hythe as he shot straight at Town keeper Luke Watkins after four minutes. On twelve minutes Luke Harvey turned and shot but the ball went wide of the visitors goal. However Whitstable were playing some slick
football and were rewarded on the quarter of an hour when the ball fell to Kane Rowland in the Hythe box. The young striker coolly slotted the ball past Hythe keeper Roddy Hayward. Within a minute former Whitstable striker Craig Thompson had a shot from the edge of the area that went over the top. After 28 minutes a neat interchange by Scott Heard and Ian Pulman saw the latter have a shot well saved by Hayward. On 40 minutes Whitstable were two up when the ball found Pulman free in the penalty area. He chose his spot and slotted the ball home. On the balance of play the half time score was a fair reflection of the proceedings.
Within two minutes of the restart Whitstable could have been three ahead when Pulman fed Tom Loynes but his attempt went wide. Hythe were now starting to take the initiative and after 50 minutes there was a melee in the
Whitstable penalty area but the ball was cleared away. On 62 minutes Bewick shot straight at Watkins and then within a minute Shaun Welford was hand to slot home from the right hand side of the penalty area to narrow the gap. Hythe were now on the front foot as Laurence Harvey had a header turned over the bar by Watkins Within ten minutes Welford was brought down in the penalty area. The Hythe striker got up and slotted his penalty in the right hand side of the net to bring the scores level. Things got worse for Whitstable as Pulman challenged the keeper which the referee adjudged was dangerous play and the Town striker was shown the red card. As things seemed to be going Hythe’s way, a moment of magic from Loynes changed the balance of play after 84 minutes as the Whitstable winger got on the end of a ball from Ollie Gray and headed over Hayward and into the net to give Whitstable all three points. On more opportunity for Luke Harvey in injury time was denied but there was one moment of controversy at the end as Whitstable keeper Watkins was sent off after being booked for time wasting in last seconds of the game. He reacted by applauding the referee and was shown a second yellow card and a red card for his trouble.
However it was a great evening for Whitstable as they moved up to sixth place and are now only out of the play off zone on goal difference.
