Peacehaven & Telscombe 4 Whitstable Town 1
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 5th April 2014
Whitstable Town were well beaten as Peacehaven & Telscombe were crowned as Ryman League Division One champions on Saturday afternoon.
The game started disastrously as Peacehaven took the lead after only 43 seconds when Charlie Walker attacked down the left and slotted the ball past
Luke Watkins. The first half was totally dominated by the home side as after ten minutes a speculative shot by Tom Burton was easily collected by Watkins. However a minute later Town were two behind when an in swinging corner from Tom Lawley curled over Watkins into the far corner of the net. The game settled down with an improvement in the Town defence. After 24 minutes a cross into the Town penalty area but Sam Gargan could not quite get a shot in on target. Two chances came in a minute when firstly after 41 minutes Walker found himself one on one with Watkins but the Town keeper blocked well and then a minute later he shot on the turn but the ball went wide. Town had to wait until the third minute of injury time before they got their first chance when Joe Kane sailed an attempt high over the bar.
Town had the next attack at the start of the second half when Laurence Harvey tried to duck down to head the ball goal wards but couldn’t quite get on the end of it. Then the game was virtually over after 48 minutes when Walker was on hand again with a free kick from 25 yards which curled round the wall and into the top corner of the net. On 54 minutes Town substitute Curtis George had a shot which went over the bar. At the other end Tom Lawley looped a free kick which crashed into the upright and away but Peacehaven were not to be
denied a fourth when after 67 minutes the ball came out to Gargan and he slammed the ball home. It could have been five after 74 minutes when Craig Richards headed over the bar. However Town were to get a consolation after 77 minutes when Aaron Simpson was brought down in the penalty area. Up stepped Ashley Miller who sent Anthony Di Bernardo the wrong way to bring the score back to 4-1. The last two chances came for the visitors as firstly Macauley Murray had a free kicked saved by Di Bernardo and on 87 minutes Jack Parter shot straight at the Peacehaven keeper.
With Leatherhead losing at Herne Bay, Peacehaven had won the title and Town must now seal some more points to ensure Ryman South safety.
