Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Saturday 23rd November 2013

Ten man Whitstable came back from going a goal down to win three-one against Corinthian-Casuals at the Belmont on Saturday afternoon.

In a scrappy start to the game the first opportunity came for Casuals in the fourth minute when Dave Hodges attacked down the right but sent his shot straight at Luke Watkins in the Town goal. Town then started to create some opportunities with their first chance coming after seven minutes when a ball in from Craig Thompson found Scott Heard who could not get his attempt away. A minute later Ashley Baverstock got in on the action when he cut in and shot but straight at Casuals keeper Danny Bracken. Thompson was again on the attack on 17 minutes when he had a shot deflected wide.  From the resultant corner Steve Hafner found John Guest who headed the ball at Bracken who saved easily. Then on 24 minutes Casuals’ Juevan Spencer ghosted in at the far post but headed over the bar. Then came the opening goal for the visitors after 28 minutes when Hodges sent in a shot that was saved by Watkins. The

ball rebounded out and was slammed back towards goal but Ross Webb leaping to his left handled the ball. A penalty was awarded and Webb received a red card for his trouble. Up stepped Jamie Byatt to slam the ball into the net to give Casuals the lead. The lead was only to last six minutes as Ross Defoe brought down Laurence Harvey in the penalty area and Baverstock beat Bracken from the penalty spot to bring the scores level. Town had the better of the remainder of the half as firstly Baverstock breaking through had a shot blocked by Bracken  and then Joe Kane had a header from a corner blocked on the line. The half ended with both teams level.

The second period started with two opportunities for Casuals. Firstly Glen Boosey fired wired after a melee in the Town penalty area and then after 49 minutes Ellis Joseph-Wilson fired over from the edge of the area.  At the other end after 57 minutes Baverstock shot appeared to be handled in the area but the penalty appeals were turned away. Town were beginning to take control of the game and on 64 minutes Harvey sent a free kick just wide of the target. Five minutes later, Spencer should have done better for the visitors when he had plenty of room on the right but

his shot went high  and wide.  With ten minutes to go Town eventually took the lead when a Heard corner bounced around the penalty area but eventually found Thompson who hammered home from ten yards. Town sealed all three points with three minutes to go when the ball came into Kane at the far post to fire home and give Town a 3-1 lead. In the last minute Defoe was sent off for Casuals for a second yellow card after an infringement on Thompson.

Town had again shown a great fighting spirit to come back with ten men to seal the victory.
