NEW BOOK CHARTS TOWN HISTORY

7Whitstable Town Chairman Gary Johnson can be seen receiving his copy of ‘A History of Whitstable Town FC 1885-2014’ from Club Historian Bernie Thompson.

This compilation of facts, photos & memories is packed into a 320 page quality paperback, researched by long time & dedicated supporter Bernard Thompson; it includes paper cuttings going back over the last century to the current date charting the history of this old fashioned club.

Full Members of The FA for 75 years & currently plying their trade in the Ryman League South, the Club continues to make history.

Thompson (69) said, I’ve been researching and compiling the book for the last 25 years, it’s not only been history in the making but enormously time consuming too as I’ve researched the archives; it’s been great fun and brought back so many personal memories to me too since my involvement with the club going back to when I was as boy……it might not be a best seller, I might not achieve a Nobel prize for literature but I’m pleased to be able to launch this book charting the history of the Club. So much has gone into this & so many have contributed towards this publication I can’t start to thank them all…..any profits from this book will be donated to the Club; if it sells reasonably well I will consider having more printed.’

A4-sized paperback, with laminated cover, illustrated with over 350 pictures, most not seen for many years and some never been seen before. This book is the first “complete record” of Whitstable Town Football Club, and includes a narrative account of the Clubs progress, covering its formation in 1885 when only friendly matches were played before it joined the Thanet League, East Kent League, Kent League and then promotion to the Ryman League. The text is augmented with a lavish production of photographs and has been written with passion and pride.  The foreword has been written by Nicky Southall the former Premier League player with Bolton Wanderers who has also represented Hartlepool, Grimsby Town, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest and Gillingham prior to playing and managing at Whitstable Town FC.  Bernard Thompson is a long term supporter, committee member and Club historian of Whitstable Town FC and has been gathering together the material for this book for the last 24 years and is pleased to see it in print.

The book is a large-sized paperback book of 320 pages with b/w illustrations and a full colour laminated cover. The price is £20. Copies are available on match days from the Belmont, home of Whitstable Town Football Club or from Oxford Street Books, 28a Oxford Street, Whitstable, or by phoning 07561 037996

Meanwhile Gary Johnson commented, ‘it’s a fantastic book; Bernie has dedicated so much time to the cause over the years & has brought back so many memories to the locals whom have & still support the club, many of those past have also been remembered. Its staggering when you look back through the years. The ground has retained much of its character that it has today which the book epitomizes. I’m so proud of the achievements of Bernie and really can’t begin to thank him enough.’

A limited number of books are currently available.

The opening sales at yesterdays fixture vs. Sittingbourne delighted Bernie whom adds that Ground hoppers, football historians and all wanting a copy of this superb book should in the first instance either visit or contact the club to order a copy or for more information.
