Dover Athletic 1 – 2 Whitstable Town
Kent County Cup 2nd Round
Sunday 2nd November 2012
Whitstable’s Under 18’s took on Dover Athletic in the County Cup on Sunday 2nd December and made it two cup wins in a week, after their victory at Maidstone last Tuesday. On a heavy playing surface, it proved quite an even contest with both teams vying for dominance. There were several chances with Town going close from a couple of corners from Dan Packers. The midfield battle was evident with both teams putting in some tough tackles, with the Whitstable and ex-Dover striker, Tom Bines, taking the full brunt of a high boot leaving him with two nasty gashes to his head, requiring hospital treatment. Whitstable had to reshuffle and this clearly had an impact as on around 30 minutes a Dover corner was headed home with the Town Keeper, Harry Barrow, stranded. This seemed to spur Town on and within two minutes they were level, a corner driven in and headed home powerfully by Kari Creed at the far post. Half time 1-1.
The second half proved to be a similar affair, but Whitstable played with more control and started to take hold of the game, creating two or three chances. Both teams knew that extra time and penalties could loom. Dover changed their formation to 3 at the back, in search of a winner, but this only played into Whitstable ‘s hands, and in the 85th minute a ball sent into the Dover’s penalty area caused confusion allowing Connor Rochester to strike the ball home from 6 yards, scoring against his old club. He had one more chance prior to the final whistle, but the Dover keeper managed to make a good stop diving to his left.
Another good victory for the Whitstable boys, who now wait to see who they will draw in Round 3.
