Whitstable Town recovered from their midweek  defeat at Merstham with a brave one nil win on Saturday afternoon at home to Burgess Hill Town.

The first half started with an early attack from Burgess Hill as in the first minute Pat Harding struck a weak shot directly at Luke Watkins. Whitstable had their first attack after seven minutes when Scott burst into the penalty area but Hillians keeper Tom Beaddle saved easily. The visitors continued to look dangerous when Greg Luer surged into the penalty area but the Whitstable defence blocked him out. At the other end Ashley Miller broke into the Hillians area after 25 minutes but sent the ball over the bar. Two minutes later Craig Maguire shot wide for Town. Burgess Hill continued to penetrate the Town defence as Graham Martin hit a shot after 33 minutes from the edge of the area over the bar. 60 seconds later a header from

Darren Budd threatened the hosts goal but Watkins saved at full stretch.  Burgess Hill then had a golden opportunity when three minutes before half time Paul Armstrong blasted over when it looked easier for him to hit the target. The first half ended goalless but on the balance of play the hosts could count themselves fortunate.

However the second half saw more from Whitstable and after  52 minutes Macauley Murray shot from the edge of the area over the bar. The Oystermen broke the deadlock after 57 minutes with the goal that proved to be the winner when Scott Heard broke free and looped the ball over the advancing Beaddle into the net to the delight of the home crowd. The hosts continued to press and after 61 minutes Miller pulled the ball back from the by line but Maguire fired wide. Five minutes later a Steve Hafner corner found Joe Kane who headed over the bar.  Burgess Hill continued to look dangerous and with 21 minutes to go Luer shot but Watkins was again on hand to save.  Lee Denyer was then sent off

for the Hillians with 15 minutes left on the clock for something he said to the linesman reducing the visitors to ten men. The Hillians had their best chance after 81 minutes when substitute Danny Curd headed down but Watkins managed to tip the ball over the bar as it bounced upwards. Only one more chance for Whitstable a minute later as Heard cut in and shot over. Burgess Hill pressed forward in the last few minutes but could not breakdown the resolute Whitstable defence.

The result was massive for Whitstable as they retained the gap above the danger zone below.
