Whitstable Town came back from a goal down to gain a deserved point from promotion favourites Hastings United on Tuesday evening.

The game started at high tempo with the first chance coming after only 38 seconds when Luke Watkins blocked a shot from Sam Adams. After two minutes a Ian Pulman corner found Nick Treadwell who headed over the bar. With five minutes gone Town were denied by the post as Pulman got on the end of a Scott Heard cross. Four minutes later Frankie Sawyer found himself free on the right and blasted the ball over the bar. Pulman was looking dangerous as he headed a

Tom Loynes cross wide after 23 minutes and then hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area again just wide of the post. Hastings were also creating opportunities. On 39 minutes Sam Crutwell hit a free kick way over the bar and then the hosts had their best chance when Adi Olorunda had a shot deflected back to Sawyer who shot wide. It would have been unfair if either side had gone in with an advantage at half time.

Hastings started the second half on the attack and as three minutes in Richard Rose shot across the goal mouth. Then after 54 minutes Tim Olorunda shot over the bar from outside the area. Town however were creating chances as on the hour Tom Loynes weaved into the penalty area but his shot was saved by hosts keeper Josh Pelling. Hastings should have taken the lead after 62 minutes when Adi Olorunda blasted over from five yards out. The deadlock was finally broken

after 73 minutes when Hastings striker Sawyer broke through and slotted the ball past Watkins. However their lead only lasted five minutes and Heard sent a 50 yard ball to Loynes who crossed into Jake Mackenzie who blasted the ball into the roof of the net to bring the scores level.  Both sides could have stolen the points in the last ten minutes as firstly Heard ran through the Hastings defence but shot wide and then on 82 minutes Loynes cut in and shot but again went wide. Sawyer at the other end shot but Joe Kennett was on the line to clear the ball away. Finally Luke Watkins saved well two minutes from time when Adams hit a free kick from the edge of the area.

It was a great point for the Town as they find themselves temporarily in second place in the table.
