Whitstable Town 2 East Grinstead Town 3

Ryman League Division One (South)

Saturday 28th November 2015

When you are down the bottom of the table things don’t always seem to go for you as Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat to fellow strugglers East Grinstead Town proved.

It was the visitors who created the first opportunity when ex Whitstable defender George Benner headed wide of the target. Harry Stannard playing his first game for Whitstable created the first chance for the Town when he swung a cross in to Dean Grant who slammed his shot from ten yards onto the cross bar. Danny Leonard had the next chance for East Grinstead has he broke through but pulled his shot wide.  Stannard was in the action again for the hosts as he found Sam Conlon but the ball was blocked and then Stannard got onto a corner from Sam Bewick but Nic Taylor in

the East Grinstead goal held easily. Grant was then denied by Taylor before on half an hour East Grinstead took the lead as Connor Hendrie slotted the ball home. However the lead was only to last nine minutes as a deep Stannard cross found Grant who headed home. Stannard continued to be a threat as he blasted the ball against the cross bar. He was also to feed a cross into Michael Hurcomb who headed just wide.

The second half started with an attack from East Grinstead as Melford Simpson fired just wide. Connor Heffernan was next in the action for Whitstable as he hit a shot off balance that went just wide. On the hour a stunning strike from Stannard dipped and curled into the top corner to give Whitstable the lead. Substitute Travis Jackson shot just wide for the hosts before Danny Leonard broke through the Whitstable defence but he sent his shot wide.  Then the last ten minutes that gave East Grinstead the win as they equalised on 80 minutes as Jalioh Hassan who headed the ball in. Then within three minutes

there was an infringement in the Whitstable penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty. Up stepped Teppill Miller who sent Town keeper Dan Eason the wrong way. One more chance for the visitors as on the stroke of full time Eason was to deny Yanice Gnahore a fourth for East Grinstead.

It was tough on Whitstable who deserved at least a point in a much improved performance.

Team: Eason, Edwards, Crimmen, Algar (Ongui 79mins), Smith, Conner Heffernan, Stannard, Bewick, Hurcomb (Travis Jackson 67mins), Grant, Ira Jackson (Conlon 11mins).
