Whitstable Town 1 Merstham 0

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Tuesday 19th March 2013

A first half Ollie Lee goal sealed three Ryman League points on Tuesday night as Town rose to their highest league position since October. The kick off had been delayed by 30 minutes due to floodlight problems which were thankfully resolved prior to kick off.

The first quarter of an hour were quiet with few chances but after 16 minutes  Tom Brunt attempted a shot but the ball deflected to David Raggett whose shot cannoned onto the post. Two minutes later Lee struck the decisive goal. Laurence Harvey hit a shot that was blocked and

Lee was on hand to slam the ball into the back of the net. Merstham attacks were few and far between but they did have a shout for a penalty turned down following a challenge by Tom Axford. Town continued to control the game and after 32 minutes Raggett should have done better when he found himself one on one with the young Merstham keeper O’Shane Brown. Unfortunately the big Town striker sent his shot at the keeper who saved easily. The visitors had their first meaningful chance in the 36th minute when former Faversham striker Adrian Stone could not pull his hooked shot back enough to find the target.  Another Merstham chance after 40 minutes but striker Fabio Sarana could not capitalise. Town went in at half time with a well deserved one goal lead.

The second half started quietly and the first real opportunity of the half did not come until the hour mark when Jake Beecroft sent a free kick high and wide of the target from 25 yards. Five minutes later James Everitt had a chance and hooked the ball back only for Brown to save. There was little more goal mouth action until the 87 minute when

James Everitt hit a long range shot just wide. Then injury time he again broke free and lobbed Brown to find the net only for the goal to be ruled out due to offside.

The full time whistle marked the end of good evening’s work for Whitstable as the defence nullified a strong Merstham front line to limit their goal attempts to a minimum. The three points really helped Town’s quest to move away from the relegation zone.
