Dean Ruddy saves second penalty

Whitstable Town 1 Hythe Town 2

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Saturday 13th April 2013

Whitstable fell to a late Hythe goal in a bad tempered derby game at the Belmont on Saturday.  One of the biggest surprises was that 22 players were still on the pitch at the end of the game.

The first twenty minutes contained three penalty area incidents all with separate outcomes. After three minutes Whitstable had a claim for a penalty when Micheal Everitt appeared to be pushed in the back but the penalty appeals were turned away. The second ended with Hythe taking the lead after confusion in the Town penalty area. Dean Ruddy was adjudged to have committed an offence and the referee pointed straight at the spot. Up stepped Hythe captain Dave

Four minutes later the referee was again in  the action when he controversially pointed to the spot when James Everitt was adjudged to a brought down a Hythe striker. Cook stepped up again but this time sent the ball too near Ruddy who saved well.  The game then had a period of a midfield battle with neither side creating many chances until after 38 minutes Cook was in the action again when he netted after a cross from Jake Hobbs but the goal was ruled out for offside.  Whitstable did get a deserved equaliser four minutes before the interval when a Jake Beecroft cross eventually found Micheal Everitt who  smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

The second half started with neither side really getting on top. After 49 minutes a muddle in the hosts defence but the ball eventually went wide for a goal kick. Hobbs then had a chance for Hythe but could not capitalise on the opportunity. Cook then had another opportunity but his shot went

wide after 57 minutes. On the hour a lovely ball in from James Everitt found his brother Micheal who headed his shot goalwards.  Hythe goalkeeper Dan Eason managed to stretch to tip the ball over the bar. From resultant corner Laurence Harvey  headed the ball on but Tom Brunt sent his effort over the bar.  After 73 former Whitstable midfielder Michael Yianni had a speculative shot which he miss hit with ball going out for a throw.  Five minutes later a cross from Brunt found the hardworking Smissen whose attempt went over the bar. Then came the decisive moment of the half when Dan Hanshaw seemed to have an eternity to fire a shot at the Hythe goal but was unable to get his attempt away. Hythe gained possession and went straight up the other end and Cook fired home to give Hythe all three points.
