Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Tuesday 16th September 2014

Whitstable Town performed a “Smash & Grab” raid at Tooting & Mitcham United as an injury time  goal gave them a share of the points.

The early exchanges were fairly even with the first opportunity coming for the hosts on five minutes when TJ Nkoma received the ball of the far post but blasted wide. A minute later at the other end Ian Pulman down the left channel shot straight at keeper Paul Smith. On 17 minutes Scott Heard made a run for Town but shot speculatively rather than pass to Jake Mackenzie who was free on the right. The ball went wide of the target. Tooting then had two chances which were both easily saved by Luke Watkins. Firstly on 23 minutes Francis Quarm shot straight at the Town keeper and then on 28 minutes Billy Marshall did

the same from long range. Mackenzie then attacked down the right at the other end. He got the ball past the keeper but his angle was too narrow. His attempt rebounded to Matty Guila who blasted over. On 38 minutes a great ball for Tooting found Howard Newton but he could not get a shot in on target.

Tooting came out the stronger in the second half and took the lead on  51 minutes when another searching ball found Newton who slammed the ball past Watkins.  Two minutes later it was very  nearly two when a defensive mistake beat Watkins and the ball was steadily rolling towards the goal  but Watkins didn’t give up and was able to claw the ball away at the last minute.  Two chances for Tooting in quick succession as firstly after 66 minutes  Sol Pinnock shot but Watkins was again on hand to palm the ball onto the cross bar and then Jordan Cheadle shot straight at the Town keeper.  Pulman then had a shot at the  other end from the edge of the penalty area which sailed just over the bar. Nick Treadwell suddenly found himself free in the

penalty after 84 minutes but the Town midfielder had his shot deflected away for a corner. Tooting could have sealed it five minutes from time as firstly Watkins saved and then the impressive Mackenzie cleared off the line. Eight minutes were added due to a blood injury to Tooting keeper  Paul Smith who was eventually replaced by Sub keeper Harvey Cheadle. In the first minute of added time Town were awarded a throw in on the right.   Reiss Crimmen sent in a long throw deep throw into the Tooting box finding Kane Rowland in a crowd of players and the Town striker was able to head the ball home to bring the scores level.  In the remaining minutes both sides had the opportunities to snatch all three points but the score remained level.

It was a point gained rather than two lost as Town now look forward to two home games over the next week.
