Whitstable Town impressed on their travels on Saturday coming away with an important three points against Worthing as they won 3-1.

The game started with Worthing looking the more likely in the early exchanges and had their first attack after three minutes when Jacob Peake fed the ball to Omar Bugiel who shot wide. However Town’s first opportunity after six minutes came closer as David Raggett found Scott Heard who hit the cross bar. However this was a rare attack at this stage as Worthing

continued to apply the pressure. After nine minutes Will Berry flicked the ball on goalwards but Luke Watkins was on hand to gather the ball easily. After a quarter of an hour Alex Clarke hit a shot well over the Whitstable bar and then on 20 minutes he shot wide. On 22 minutes Peake sent in a bullet shot from the edge of the penalty area that was saved well by Watkins. As the half progressed Town came more into the game as after 26 minutes Steve Hafner sent a ball towards Laurence Harvey (playing in attack) but Jack Fagan in the Worthing goal was first to the ball and was able to clear away. Hafner put in the corner which Heard met with a bullet header which went just wide. With 33 minutes the busy Heard raced into the penalty area but could only fire a shot straight at Fagan. Two opportunities then fell to Worthing striker Bugiel who first on 39 minutes forced Watkins into a fine save and then a minute later collected the ball but fired past the post. Then came Town’s break through on 44 minutes  when it firstly appeared that keeper Fagan had handled the ball outside the area as Harvey attempted to lob him but the referee saw it that Peake committed a foul and was shown a red card as it was seen a goal scoring opportunity.   Hafner then drilled his free kick into the left hand corner of the net to give Town a half time lead.

The second half started with the hosts looking to get back in the game. Brannon O’Neill fired a free kick from just out of the area and Watkins did well to push the ball over the bar. Town continued to counter and on 73 minutes Jake Mackenzie, moving in from the left, had his shot blocked by Fagan. On 74 minutes, ten man, Worthing were level when George Gaskin hooked the ball in the penalty area into the Town net.  However with ten minutes left on the clock Billy Cobb sent in a long throw which was headed on by Harvey finding Joe Kane who blasted the ball past Fagan to reclaim the lead for the visitors.  Worthing had to start looking for an equaliser again and after 81 minutes O’Neill shot over the bar.  Town soaked up the pressure and then sealed the game in the last action of the match as William Humphrey broke into the penalty area and was brought down. Up stepped Heard whose penalty was well saved by Fagan but the ball rebounded back to Heard who buried the wall into the Worthing net.

The win was well earned and opened a five point gap between Whitstable and the relegation zone.
