Whitstable put up a gutsy performance to recover from an early set back to bring home a deserved point away at Hythe Town.

However the early exchanges were dominated by Hythe and they took the lead after just one minute. Ex Whitstable midfielder Michael Yianni sent in a shot that was cleared off the line. The rebound came back to him and he fired home. Hythe continued to look threatening but the Whitstable defence

stood firm. The visitors however did have their first opportunity after three minutes but Scott Heard’s attempt went straight at Hythe keeper Dan Eason.  A further opportunity from James Morrish occurred after 13 minutes but his header went high and wide.  Hythe were still pressing and in 19th minute Ryan Cooper had a shot that was blocked. After 21 minutes Heard went down in the penalty area with appeals for a spot kick which did not impress the referee.  Hythe’s leading scorer Dave Cook got on the end of a cross but sent his header wide of the target.  Four minutes later Whitstable defender Laurence Harvey headed wide from a Heard free kick. The end to end game then saw Hythe’s Tom Hickman run which ended with a shot going wide of the target.  As the half moved on, the visitors were really testing the Hythe defence and they finally got their reward after 39 minutes when Heard put the ball into the penalty area. Mo Takaloo managed to fire the ball into the corner of the net to bring the scores level.  One more real opportunity just on half time  when the hard working Whitstable captain Morrish sent in a shot that Eason pushed around the post.

The second half began with the visitors looking the more dangerous. In the first minute there was a melee in the Hythe penalty area in which Heard and Ross Webb had attempts which were cleared away. Another opportunity after 51 minutes saw Morrish send in a 25 yard shot that went just wide of the target. Town continued to press and a Steve Hafner delivered a free kick that went through

everyone but Eason managed to push the ball away. On the hour Town had the ball in the net but Joe Lester’s goal was ruled out for off side.  The ever dangerous Morrish curled a shot wide two minutes later. Hythe then had a couple of opportunities most notably when Pat Kingwell had a shot which was gathered well by Luke Watkins after hitting the inside of the post.  One more opportunity of note fell to Whitstable when Lester beat Cooper but sent his shot over the bar. Hythe were pressing towards the end but the Whitstable defence stayed resolute and took away a deserved point from a gutsy performance.
