GUERNSEY TAKE THEIR CHANCES TO GET THE POINTS

Guernsey 2 Whitstable Town 0

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Saturday 5th December 2015

Whitstable showed signs of improvement on Saturday but were sunk by two pieces of excellent finishing in the second half in their 2-0 defeat on Guernsey.

The first half started brightly with plenty of goal mouth action at both ends. The first chance came for Guernsey as Ross Allen hit a free kick over the bar and then Ryan-Zico Black had a another free kick that was well held by Town keeper Dan Eason. Town had to wait until the eleventh minute for Charlie Smith to cut a ball across the face of the goal. A stooping Matt Loaring header from a corner threatened but that went wide of the target. Dean Grant then carved through the Guernsey defence but his final shot was deflected onto the post by Guernsey keeper Chris Tardiff and wide. On 23 minutes a little hesitancy in the Town defence allowed Black a header which went over. Eason was good form as he saved well from Allen who shot on the turn. Whitstable then had their brightest period of the game. Firstly Grant tried to lob Tardif who just got his hand to the ball to prevent a goal. Sam Bewick then fired wide and Charlie Smith hit a free kick over the Guernsey bar. Eason was on hand to prevent anything coming from a melee in the Town defence. Just before half time Whitstable had another chance as he fed Harry Stannard whose shot was easily collected by Tardif.

Town were the first to show in the second half as a Grant corner was headed over by Bewick. This was the time that Guernsey began to edge ahead as on 55 minutes Allen punished the Whitstable defence who had stood up well during the first half. He was able to get onto a loose ball and shoot home. On 75 minutes a bullet free kick by Smith was punched away by Tardif and then at the other end two minutes later the hosts sealed the points as Loaring weaved his way into the penalty area and slotted the ball home with his right foot. With five minutes to go Craig Young shot over for the bar for the hosts and then Loaring sent in a shot that was pushed wide by Eason.

It was another defeat but there are some real signs of green shoots of recovery and if they can carry this improvement into the next couple of games then more points will be put on the board.

Team: Eason, Edwards, Wraight (Skinner 71mins), Algar (Ongui 86 mins), Punton, Cameron Heffernan, Conlon (Hurcomb 76mins), Bewick Smith, Grant, Stannard.

Despite the result, the hospitality shown by Guernsey Football Club to everyone who had travelled from Whitstable was as usual excellent.  Our thanks to everyone who made us feel so welcome.
