Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Saturday 13th December 2014

A thoroughly entertaining seven goal thriller ended in Guernsey taking all three points from their visit to Whitstable on Saturday afternoon.

The game actually started quietly with Jacques Isabelle having the first attempt for the Islanders but his shot was fired straight at keeper Luke Watkins. Another opportunity at the same end saw Marc McGrath send in speculative shot high over the bar. Whitstable created their first chance on 17 minutes when Tom Loynes sent in a dangerous cross but Conner Coyne could not get on the end of it.  A minute later a Pulman corner found Aaron James but the Town defender headed wide. The hosts continued to press as a Joe Kennett header from a Pulman corner was blocked by Chris Tardif. Watkins then denied Guernsey on 22 minutes when Liam Mahon had an attempt on goal. On 25 minutes Pulman had a shot pushed over the bar by Tardif but within three minutes Guernsey drew

first blood when Mahon bundled the ball over the line following a melee in the Whitstable penalty area. On 33 minutes, Whitstable had a chance to draw level when Pulman fired over the bar. However Town were level a minute before half time when Pulman was inexplicably brought down in the penalty area. He got up and slotted away the penalty into the left hand corner of the net.

Guernsey regained the lead straight after the re start. A cross come shot from the right from Isabelle sailed over Watkins into far side of the net. On 55 minutes Town were unlucky not to be level as Pulman pulled the ball back to Nick Treadwell whose header was cleared of the line by Tom Strawbridge. Town were level again on 57 minutes when Pulman got onto a loose ball and slotted home. Within a minute, Town were ahead when Pulman hit the cross bar and Kane

Rowland was on hand to slot home the rebound.  Ten minutes later the scores were level again when Strawbridge slid the ball under Watkins. Both sides were now looking for the winner. Firstly Town’s Peter Wedgeworth sent in a cross that was headed over by Tom Loynes and then on 82 minutes Rowland sent a shot that was deflected wide.  However it was Guernsey who were to have the last laugh when McGrath hooked a shot past Watkins to give the visitors all three points. Town did press for an equaliser but were unable to penetrate the Guernsey defence.  Unfortunately the game ended on a sour note as Guernsey’s Jason Winch was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Whitstable were left rueing some missed chances and defensive errors.
