Folkestone Invicta 2 Whitstable Town 3

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Saturday 10th January 2015

Whitstable Town’s amazing run continued at Folkestone Invicta on Saturday afternoon as they came away with a 3-2 win to put them in touching distance of the play offs.

Invicta had the best of the early exchanges and had the first attempt on three minutes when Jon Pilbeam had a shot deflected wide by Town goalkeeper Luke Watkins. On ten minutes they had their second chance when the ever dangerous Jordan Wright had a long range strike go wide of the target.  Town had to wait until 13 minutes when Luke Girt turned and shot but the attempt was easily saved by Tim Roberts. Town were starting to

take control of the game and with 16 minutes on the clock, Tom Loynes hit a left foot shot but the ball was deflected wide of the target. On 26 minutes a Jake Mackenzie cross  found Girt but Roberts parried the ball away. Folkestone were still threatening on the break and the prolific Ian Draycott pounced on some defensive hesitancy but the ball went over the bar. Town were to take the lead on 31 minutes when Ian Pulman broke free, rounded the keeper and planted the ball into the net. There was a threat to the Town goal seven minutes later when Matt Newman sent in a shot from the left right across the goalmouth and wide.

Folkestone now with wind helping started the second half with more purpose creating their first chance on 47 minutes when a defensive error allowed Richard Atkins to shoot but he fired wide. On 50 minutes, Draycott had another chance that went over the bar.  On the hour the pressure paid off when Wright got onto a loose ball and fired home.

However the goal seemed to spark Whitstable into life and on 62 minutes a dangerous Peter Wedgeworth cross nearly found Mackenzie but the Town right back couldn’t quite get to the ball. However on 66 minutes Mackenzie got his reward when he broke into the penalty and slotted his shot into the corner of the net to allow Town to regain the lead. Ronnie Dolan went close for Folkestone on 75 minutes with a powerful volley but the ball was blocked. Town sealed the game on 76 minutes when Nick Treadwell headed home from close range. Former Whitstable striker James “Ratty” Everitt was on hand to loop a shot over Watkins into the Town net on the stroke of full time to narrow the gap but it was too little too late as Town held on for three more points.

Town are now two points out of the play off zone in a season which is by far their best since promotion to the Ryman League.
