Whitstable Town 1 Deal Town 1
The Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round
Saturday 12th September 2015
Whitstable Town were held by Deal Town in a 1-1 draw at the Belmont in the Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round on Saturday afternoon.
Whitstable started the brighter and had the first opportunity on two minutes when Scott Heard broke through and tried to lob Deal keeper Chris Waymark but the ball also cleared the crossbar. On five minutes Ryan Cheek broke the offside trap as he sped down the left but he could not quite get his shot away. Within a minute Deal had their first opportunity as man of the match Charlie Walsh turned and shot wide. In next phase of the game there were few chances at each end and the
crowd had to wait until they saw the next attempt on half an hour as Sam Bewick put in a cross that found Alfie Nunn but he headed over for Whitstable. At the other end a shot by Grant Bagley from the edge of the area went over. Heard immediately counter attacked but his effort went over the bar.
Walsh was involved in the first action of the second half as he shot wide. On 52 minutes the hosts took the lead as a great move from the right saw the ball dragged in from the by line across to Alfie Nunn who slotted the ball home. Within a minute Whitstable could have been two up as a Heard header was well tipped over by Waymark. Whitstable were now on top and Kieron Campbell had the next chance blocked by Waymark. However the impetus of the game changed and Deal pressed for the equaliser. Andy Miller nearly brought the scores level on 66 minutes but Ryan Perkins blocked and then on 70 minutes Ryan Philpott blasted against the inside of the post. Bagley then turned and hooked the ball wide. Whitstable were unlucky on 83 minutes when Campbell slammed the ball against the upright. However Deal were to get the goal they deserved on the balance of play with five
minutes to go as the ball pinged around the penalty area and eventually found Walsh who fired home. Deal continued to press for the winner and Whitstable keeper Adam Highsted denied Michael Knight as he palmed a shot away for a corner.
The two teams must meet again down at Deal on Tuesday evening.
