WHITSTABLE TOWN 1 RAMSGATE 0
Saturday July 22 2017 15.00
An early defensive mistake let in Danny Williams to score the decisive goal in this third consecutive home friendly win. Whitstable should probably have won more comfortably, but were denied by the post and former Oysterman Luke Watkins in the Ramsgate goal. The visitors had few meaningful opportunities, although substitute Callum Weatherly missed a great chance to equalise in the dying moments.
Whitstable were without their injured captain Craig Cloke, who is expected to be out for a few weeks following a scan on his ankle and also unavailable were Harry Goodger, Harris Rodgers and Calvin Sedenu. Several former Whitstable players started for the visitors in addition to goalkeeper Watkins – Joe Kane, Ollie Gray, Dan Keyte, Jake Mackenzie and Adam Woollcott. They were though also missing some first team regulars, with inexperienced players up front and on the bench, one of whom Jordan Bartlett played for the Whitstable B team last season.
There was an early attempt by Ramsgate as Woollcott shot over the bar, but Whitstable were soon in front. Jacob Mensah attempted to head the ball back to Watkins, but left it short and Williams was first on the scene and he shot low past the stranded keeper.
Ricky Freeman and Louis Sprosen combined to create a chance for Charlie Smith and he worked the ball onto his left foot, but curled his shot just wide of the post. On 13 minutes Ramsgate were awarded a free kick just outside the area and Woollcott forced a save from Eason. Sprosen then took a free kick at the other end that was glanced towards the goal by Williams. The ball got past Watkins, but came back off the far post into his hands.
Aaron Quain sent a couple dangerous balls into the box from free kicks on the right, but no one was able to get a decisive touch. A Tom Bryant cross caused some problems for the visiting defenders, but they were able to clear after a spell of pressure. As half time approached, Jack Penny tried his luck with a long range effort that was saved low by Eason and a corner bobbled around dangerously in the Whitstable goalmouth before Eason was able to gather safely.
After the interval a minute’s silence was held in respect of three people who passed away recently and were part of the history of Whitstable Town. Former players Dave Williams and Dave Roy were remembered and also Dave Elliott, who managed the reserve team for a number of years.
When play restarted, an early cross by Williams was deflected towards goal where it was cleared off the line for a corner. Both teams then started to make use of their substitutes. Some good play down the right ended with a cross by Smith that reached Freeman at the far post, but Watkins was able to save his attempt. On the hour mark, a ball forward was missed by Penny and left Sprosen clear, but he was unable to get enough power in his shot to beat Watkins. Ollie Lee also had an effort saved following a corner.
Mackenzie tried to set up Penny, but his shot was too high. In the last few minutes Rob Gillman went down awkwardly and, as a precaution, was replaced by Stuart West, who had earlier been substituted himself. The impressive Ashley Brown made a great run from the back and eventually he crossed the ball to Freeman, but Watkins was out to block again.
Ramsgate had their best chance right at the end, as a ball forward went right through a crowd of players and reached the unmarked Weatherly in the penalty area, but as Eason came out, he could only send a weak shot wide of the far post. The game ended shortly afterwards and the winning pre-season run continues. The next game is again at the Belmont on Saturday against AFC Hornchurch, another Bostik League team, but this time from the north division.
