WHITSTABLE TOWN 3 ORPINGTON 0
Kent Reliance Senior Trophy First Round
Saturday October 15 2016 15.00

Whitstable eased past Orpington in this first round tie without ever being seriously troubled. A great strike from Kane Rowland after just 6 minutes opened the scoring and when Leigh Wise was sent off for handling a goal bound header 10 minutes later, Darren Marsden tucked away the resulting penalty and the game was effectively over. Orpington managed a couple of corners midway through the first half, but Dan Eason in the home goal had little to do and a good finish from “man of the match” Connor Hood just before half time completed the scoring. The second half resembled a training match at times, but in the last few minutes Craig Thompson missed the ball when he looked certain to score and Nick Treadwell hit the bar.

Scott Punton and Rob Gillman were the new pairing at the centre of defence with Ashley Brown playing for Faversham and Thompson retained his place up front alongside Rowland after the win at Croydon. Orpington FC were making their first visit to the Belmont since the late 1960s. Dane Luchford volleyed just over after an early throw was helped on. After 5 minutes a late challenge on Gillman by Alex Chambers as he cleared the ball surprisingly only resulted in a lecture. Then after play was halted at the other end, the referee restarted with a dropped ball about 20 yards out and as Luchford challenged, it rolled to Rowland who hit it first time; the ball hit the post, rolled back across the goal and over the line to open the scoring. The Orpington number ten, Chambers, was then booked after another poor tackle. On 15 minutes Rowland won a corner that was swung in by Luchford and met by Gillman whose header was kept out by the raised hand of Wise, who was shown a red card. Marsden sent goalkeeper Jack Rankin the wrong way to double the lead.

The visitors won their only two corners in quick succession around the 19 minute mark, the first of which was headed over the bar and this was to prove their best chance of the afternoon. The rest of the half was all Whitstable as they played the ball around confidently against the ten men. Luchford and Rowland combined to release Marsden who was tripped on the edge of the box, but the free kick came to nothing. Luchford himself had a couple more efforts on goal, but could not quite find the target. Then on 43 minutes a good long ball from Punton was collected by Thompson and then Hood, who skipped past a couple of challenges before shooting past Rankin from around the penalty spot. In the added minute, Whitstable won another corner and it was played short by Harry Brown to Hood, whose cross was headed over by Charlie Smith.

When play restarted, Smith shot wide from distance after being set up by Marsden and Rowland and then Rowland turned well in the box but fired over. Thompson got his head to a long throw and helped the ball on to Rowland who shot just over again. A deflected cross by Brown, was saved and a Treadwell header was just wide. The game lacked any great urgency at this stage and both managers used their substitutes. Eason had one deep cross to deal with, but was mainly a spectator.

Towards the end Whitstable went close to adding further goals. On 85 minutes, Marsden threaded the ball through to Luchford down the left and his low cross was perfect for Thompson, but he failed to connect. Just afterwards Treadwell turned on the edge of the area and his shot beat Rankin but hit the woodwork and the second half ended with no change to the score.

Connor Hood was presented with the “Man of the Match” award after the game, as chosen by supporters.

It was the second 3-0 cup win of the week for Whitstable and they were never really tested by their Division One opponents, but they can hopefully take this form into the forthcoming league matches.
