WHITSTABLE TOWN 1 HERNE BAY 2
Tuesday July 19 19.45
Whitstable lost 2-1 to local rivals Herne Bay in their first home friendly on a very warm evening at the Belmont.
Herne Bay had looked sharper in the early stages despite an early Whitstable corner and opened the scoring after 8 minutes. The referee had a straightforward decision to award a penalty following a trip in the box. Dan Eason did well to stop Danny Walder’s effort, but Stuart Zanone reacted first and cleverly clipped the ball into the far corner. The closest Whitstable came to scoring in the first half was a header from Craig Thompson into the side netting.
There were a number of substitutions as the game progressed and Herne Bay carved out a few more chances after the break, but the home defence managed to prevent the lead increasing, although Danny Williams should have done better when he curled the ball wide of the post when free on goal.
Whitstable had a spell when they started to create a few openings and equalised in the 69th minute as Stuart King’s low free kick from the edge of the box was deflected into the corner of the net. The home side then threatened again a few minutes later, the ball eventually being headed over following a good cross from the right.
It was Herne Bay though who were to score the winner after 76 minutes when Joe Nelder finished well following a good move.
Both teams will probably feel they can play a lot better and gave the ball away too easily at times, but it is still early in pre-season with time to improve before the season starts in August.
