Whitstable Town 4 Herne Bay 1
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Friday 26th December 2014
Whitstable Town produced a five star performance on Boxing Day as they hammered Herne Bay 4-1.
However it did not start well for the Town as Bay took the lead after the first attack of the game after four minutes. Sam Hasler took a free kick from the edge of area. The ball hammered against the post and rebounded onto the other post and across the line. Despite the shock, Whitstable countered with a Peter Wedgeworth free kick on
ten minutes but the shot was well held by Bay keeper Nick Delo. However Whitstable were level within three minutes when Kane Rowland put the ball into the path of Scott Heard who turned the ball into the net. After another four minutes Town took the lead as Tom Loynes found himself free. He was able to flick the ball past Delo into the net. On 19 minutes Loynes was again in the action when he came in from the right but his shot was easily collected by Delo. Whitstable keeper Luke Watkins had to be on his guard on 22 minutes when Stuart King shot but his attempt was pushed wide. On 26 minutes Aaron James looped a header from a corner into the arms of Delo and on 37 minutes Whitstable Kane Rowland headed over a cross by Wedgeworth. Town’s lead was no more than Town deserved from their first half endeavours.
Town increased their lead within five minutes of the restart as a Heard shot come cross from the right looped over Delo into the net to give the Town midfielder his second of the game. Town continued to press as on the hour the hard working Ian Pulman hit a free kick
from the edge of the area high over the bar. A minute later a melee in the Town penalty area ended with an excellent save from Watkins. King threatened again when he ran into the penalty area on 75 minutes but Watkins was again on hand to block. Rowland was to seal the game for Whitstable on 76 minutes when he dived in to head home a Loynes cross. Herne Bay had one more opportunity to narrow the gap when Sam Hasler hit a free kick high over the bar. Herne Bay’s Danny Walder saw red with two minutes to go when he was shown a second yellow card.
Town deservedly cruised to a heavy win which brought to an end their three game losing run.
