A Conner Coyne strike was enough to give Whitstable Town all three points in a 1-0 win over Hastings United on Saturday afternoon.

Whitstable were the first on the attack as Coyne was denied by Hastings keeper Josh Pelling as he met a Scott Heard corner. On six minutes Hastings has their first chance when Aaron Hopkinson broke through only to be blocked by home keeper Luke Watkins. On 21 minutes Hastings were reduced to ten men when Adam Hunt was

sent off for a second yellow card. The visitors however kept the initiative at this stage of the game as Ade Olorunda turned and fired over the bar. Then on 25 minutes home defender Aaron James failed to clear and Hopkinson pounced on the chance to break through but was prevented by a goal saving challenge by Town’s Ollie Gray. Town were still on the back foot as on the half hour Sam Adams turned in but shot straight at Watkins. Heard was denied at the other end as he broke in but his shot was well saved by Pelling. On 37 minutes another chance for Hastings as Joe Shelley turned and shot but went wide of the target. Whitstable striker, Ian Pulman shot wide on 42 minutes and then on the stroke of half time Luke Girt also had another attempt that went wide.

Whitstable started the better in the second half as Heard drove a

shot  that was well saved by Pelling after 54 minutes and then a minute later Town took the lead as Heard sent in a left footed cross from the  right which found Coyne who managed to squeeze the ball in at the near post. Town continued to press and after 59 minutes Pulman saw Pelling off his line but his chip went wide. Nick Treadwell was on hand to head off the line at the other end after 61 minutes. Pulman then  tried again to lob Hastings keeper Pelling  after 65 minutes but his attempt landed on top of the cross bar. With ten minutes to go a Heard cross found Treadwell whose header went straight at Pelling.  Hastings still looked dangerous as on 81 minutes Adams shot in at the near post to test Watkins who saved well. Whitstable substitute Matt Martin had a couple of chances in the last ten minutes as firstly after 82 minutes he broke free on the left but sent his shot across the goal mouth and then on 86 minutes he rounded Pelling but could not get the angle  right to convert.  One last chance for Hastings to get an equaliser as Tom Vickers sent a late speculative shot wide.

Whitstable were able to hold on to take all three points on a heavy pitch moving up to tenth place in the table.
