Tooting and Mitcham 3 Whitstable Town 1: Hampered by an
official who somehow managed to book five Whitstable payers in the first 45
minutes, (the same official who booked five or six of the same players in a
friendly against Folkestone two weeks ago), they played as if they were
treading on egg shells throughout the next 45 minutes.
In a game that was never
over physical or remotely dirty, apart from playing one of the best, if not
best sides in the league Town were un-done by the man in the middle’s
performance which could best be summed up as; poor.
That aside; it was an entertaining game with flashes of
good play from both side, visiting manager Marc Seager opted for Ian Pullman as
the lone striker and a packed the midfield in search of a point, or maybe
three. His ploy worked well until the 28th
minute when Town’s Gary Sayer was harshly adjudged to have committed a foul
inside the box. The penalty put the home one nil head, they went two up before
the break after Town’s defence played head tennis instead of clearing the
ball.
Midway through the second half, with Whitstable looking the
more threatening, Tooting scored their third with a long range shot that looked
to be well covered by Town keeper Kevin Fell, the deflection of the pitch he
could do nothing about. Ian Pullman converted a penalty for Town as the clock
ticked down, small consolation for his and the team’s hard work all afternoon.
Seager saying: “Not too disappointed by the
result though to be honest, if we’d have lost one nil, or maybe got a draw that
would have been a fairer reflection on the game. That’s taking nothing away
from Tooting they are a very good side. When they beat us four nil at the
Belmont, we got exactly what we deserved, nothing, as that day we looked, and
played like a ‘Kent League’ side. Today the gulf was not as great, and it’s
plain to see are improving which each game we play at this level, to be honest
I can’t wait for the next game.” Full match report by Mark Wyver to follow: ©
