The Oystermen who were wearing their away yellow
kit started brightly with Rikki Banks having to show alertness early on in the
home goal when he was equal to a through ball aimed at John Akinde.
The home side replied with Ben Andrews and Danny
Davis both shooting wide of the target when well placed. Centre Backs Michael
Adcock and Steven Lloyd also both made telling clearances from the home attack
while Jake Gess and Danny Tipple were fighting for everything.
It was Whitstable who somewhat suprisingly took the
lead when on 39 minutes a header across goal was turned past Banks by skipper
Marcos Perona for his second goal of the season. Worthing continued to look
dangerous when going forward but failed to find an equaliser before half
time.
Worthing started the second half by putting
continued pressure on Whitstable's backline with Kevin Fewell saving well from
Andrews and Matt Phelan blazing over when well placed.
The Town almost extended their lead when a cross
from John Akinde was cleared only as far as Sam Denly whose shot was parried by
Banks to the feet of Jon Neal whose effort was cleared off the line by a home
defender before a melee insued which was eventually stopped by the Referee who
awarded Worthing a free kick.
This miss was to be rued on the 60 minute mark when
from a left wing cross by Phelan the ball eluded everybody apart from the
unfortunate Lloyd who could only help the ball into his own net.
The home side looked to kill the game off with
their passing play but continued to miss chances while Whitstable never really
created to much. The killer second goal came in bizare circimstances with 88
minutes on the clock.
Kevin Fewell and Ben Andrews both challenged for a
high ball. Fewell looked to be fouled as Andrews tapped the ball home. After a
shake of the head to rule the goal out Referee McGann consulted his linesman who
ruled the goal legitmate and so Worthing led 2-1.
The third and final goal came in injury time when
Substitute Terry Dodds who had only just come on beat Fewell with a tap in with
his first touch of the ball.
Whitstable certainly deserved a point from their
longest trip of the season but it can be a cruel game at times.

Despite the
scoreline, which some might say flattered the home side, though in truth it would
have been harsh on them had Town held onto their first half single goal lead to
leave the Sussex coast with all three points. The visitors Whitstable; without testing the home side
keeper, or winning a single corner took the lead with their first
attack, having withstood at least half a dozen attempts on Kevin Fewell’s goal
and as many corner kicks, to Whitstable’s none. In the 2nd half Worthing won the game with a
ball bundled over the line with Fewell on the floor, then scored their third in
the last minutes of the match as the visitors pushed up-field in an effort to
salvage a point. |
