After their midweek defeat at Ashford Town the Reds travelled to Whyteleafe in search of three Ryman Division One South points. Gary Sayer, Marcos Perona and Steve Marshall all returned to the starting line up after the loss in midweek.
On a bobbly pitch which was one of the worst seen this season it was the home side who made a lively start. Marc Seager's side had long range shots from Perona which was easily dealy with by Rob Tolfrey in the home goal and Tommy Martin who fired high and wide. The deadlock was broken on nineteen minutes when after the ball was only half cleared by The Town defence Whyteleafe's Callum Maclean volleyed the ball superbly past Kevin Fewell to put the home side one up. Without any real drive from the Whitstable side it was the home side who extended their lead on thirty four minutes when after some more poor defending Daniel Patel who had earlier been booked beat Fewell to make it 2-0. A lifeline was given to The Reds on 40 minutes when after the referee awarded Town a free kick midfielder Tommy Martin curled the ball round the home wall from twenty yards and with keeper Tolfrey clutching at thin air the ball hit the top of the net to make it 2-1. A much better second half performance by Town failed to find an equaliser and Whyteleafe extended their lead with a superb third goal. Jamie Brotherton hit a superb shot from distance which beat Fewell and put the home side two goals ahead once again. Spurred on at this time by Sam Denly in his midfield role it took until the 70th minute before another comeback looked on the cards. From a run by Akinde which ended up in him being brought down in the area a penalty was awarded. Akinde stepped up to comfortably beat Tolfrey to make it 3-2. The home sides defence were beginning to look rattled with manager Dave Swindlehurst looking agitated on the bench. All hope of a comeback were ended however on 80 minutes when Terry Fennessy scored another superb goal for the home side and left Whitstable wondering why they only start playing when they go behind in a game. The Reds introduced Jon Neal and Tom Parker to the fray late on but to no avail. |
