Picture Jon Akinde: Mark Wyver reports on a poor night for Town: On a bitterly cold night at Homelands visiting Whitstable Town went down to an Ashford Town side who looked like a side chasing promotion.
Marc Seager's side started brightly with John Akinde shooting into the side netting and Alex Hossick shooting wide from distance. Picture Jon Akinde scored Town goal late in the second half: It was the home side who broke the deadlock on eighteen minutes when fomer Chatham striker Rob Denness finished after some hesitancy in the Whitstable backline. The home side then started dominating proceedings with Walid Matata and Joby Thorogood causing the visiting defence all sorts of problems. The second goal duly arrived on thirty one minutes when the highly rated Jimmy Bottle capatlised on some further inept hesitancy to fire home to give Clive Walker's men a 2-0 lead. The home side continued to press and again went close before Whitstable fought back forcing two corners before half time which came to nothing. At the start of the second half former Sittingbourne midfielder Clint Gooding came on to replace Alex Hossick in an attempt to give The Reds more experience in the engine room. Despite this move it was former Folkestone Invicta forward Walid Matata who extended the home sides lead with a superb shot which beat Kevin Fewell. To the former Kent League Champions credit they never gave up and were rewarded when Akinde beat Jake Whincup with ease with fifteen minutes to go after a long ball through the centre of Ashford's defence. So the end of Whitstable Town's mini unbeaten run against a side which will in my view will be challenging for a Play Off spot come the end of the Ryman Division One South season. |
