It'll be fun at the YMCA! PDF Print E-mail
Whitstable Town return to league duties this week with a trip to Horsham YMCA on Saturday afternoon. Both sides have had 'slow burner' starts to the Ryman South 2007/8 campaign, which sets up this fixture perfectly for a closely fought contest
In sixteenth and nineteenth places the match wouldn't raise much enthusiasm for their supporters later on in the season but after only four games another three points could propel the winner into mid-table. The YM's picked up their solitary win against another newly promoted side, Eastbourne Town 2-1 at Horsham, Town drew 2-2 with the same opposition, at the Belmont in their first game, which points toward a finely balanced affair. I have to say that travelling support has been a bit thin so far this year, certainly down on last season, I assume that once the season of barbecues and weddings has passed we will return to our very vocal best. Please be there this weekend if you possibly can, Marc and his players need our backing. There's still 114 more points on offer and, after seeing the opposition to date, I believe a play-off slot is well within the capability of our talented squad. Come on you Reds!
Elsewhere on planet Isthmian 1, the top three sides are all at home this weekend, Dover host Dulwich Hamlet, Sittingbourne get a visit from the Metropolitan Police and Kingstonian entertain Molesey. The Ks probably have the easier task, with Molesey only having taken a point at Eastbourne so far they look certain to come away with nil points. As always the 'derby effect' could even things up but the record shows two 2-0 wins in the league for Kingstonian last term I figure that trend will continue. The Oystermen will be watching the Brickies result with interest to further gauge the opposition, having been beaten,2-1, by the Blues a couple of weeks back and by no means outplayed the result will give a clue as to the outcome of our Kent Senior Cup fixture. Dover dropped two points at the Belmont on bank holiday Monday and are looking for players on loan already, not a sign of a confident side, Hamlet might be able to take advantage of an unsettled Dover side and beat it back to London with a point or three, they're quite capable
Tied for fourth and fifth are Croydon Athletic, who travel to Whytleafe, and Tooting & Mitcham who play at home against a struggling Chipstead side. The tougher result to get will be at Whyteleafe no doubt, Chips have yet to break their Ryman duck, indeed they failed to beat Sussex Div.2 opposition in the FA Cup last weekend, and away to the Terrors is not a likely place to start a comeback. Three almost certain points for T&M will certainly keep thing very interesting at the top. Athletic and Leafe finished 19th and 20th last year, with Athletic winning both league encounters 1-0. Croydon started stronger this year but I suspect this game will be another close scoring contest.
Ships passing in the night on the A3 as Leatherhead head south to Worthing and Burgess Hill Town head north for their match against Walton & Hersham. Leatherhead are just three points behind the other three sides who are all on seven points from four starts and the middle table is already looking very close. Still not much evidence on which to base a prediction, but the relegatees Worthing and Walton & Hersham will gain a measure of the quality in this league against two sides that finished comfortably in mid-table in 06/07.
Chatham Town are on the same points tally as their hosts for the day, Eastbourne Town. With good home support I think that Bourne should be worth at least a point against Chatham who previously have similarly drawn two out of their first four.
Finishing off the fixture list both sets of casuals, both with two draws and two losses face apparently superior Kentish opposition. Ashford Town welcome Corinthian-Casuals and Cray Wanderers spruce up the white lines for the benefit of Walton Casuals. Current form indicates two home wins, a hundred per cent home record for the Wanderers is adequate proof while Ashford's win and a loss were against top three, and therefore in-form, opposition. The Casuals and the Stags will have to wait for easier prey in order to rekindle their form.
