Town crash out of the FA Cup PDF Print E-mail
Picture: Josh Maine scored Towns goal: An inept second half performance saw Whitstable Town crash out of the FA Cup at the Preliminary stage to former Kent League rivals Thamesmead Town.
On a superb playing surface The Reds started rather sluggishly with James Brown and Scot Mulholland winning the midfield battles for the home side. I t was however Whitstable who had the best chance when Steve Marshall shot wide of Chris Conneally's left hand post.

Thamesmead responded with Richard Dimmock and Curtis Williams both forcing good saves out of Kevin Fewell. Sam Denly also had a good shooting chance for The Reds which he blazed over the bar.

The deadlock was broken on 35 minutes when after some skillfull play from Denly which resulted in him hooking the ball across goal for big defender Josh Maine to head past Conneally to give Whitstable a 1-0 lead.

Despite being without the talented Rikki Cable the Kent Leaguers always looked dangerous with Bradley Killick giving Michael Adcock a torrid time at right back.

Whitstable started the second half as though they didn't want success in the FA Cup as they looked disjointed and the team from a lower league. Fewell again kept them in it with further saves from Dimmock and Brown.

It was only a matter of time before the equaliser came and it was the 63rd minute when it happened.  After picking up a loose ball the shaven headed Mullholland struck a sweet shot which left Fewell rooted to the spot and the scores were level.

Five minutes later and the home side were ahead when former VCD and Herne Bay striker Dimmock beat Fewell from close range much to the delight of the home bench.

Whitstable's best chance after the second goal was when left midfielder Tom Parker hit a superb shot which Conneally acrobatically tipped over the bar.

The final nail in the coffin came two minutes from time when substitute Ebaneezer McCabe beat Fewell and with his celebration a lot better than the Whitstable performance its Thamesmead who will entertain Carshalton Athletic in the next round of the worlds best competition.
