Town win Kent Shield PDF Print E-mail
Whitstable Town secured the Kent League Challenge Shield after defeating Thamesmead Town 3-2 at a sun drenched Belmont Road on Saturday.
The home side started the first half looking very nervous at the back with the talented Rikki Cable causing problems whenever he received the ball.
Home goalkeeper Kevin Fewell returning to the side after suffering shin splints looked comfortable in his handling without really being tested in the opening stages while his opposite number Danny Kemp coped well with a Stuart King shot.
 
It was the visitors who opened the scoring on the half hour mark, when Cable went on a mazy run beating three Whitstable defenders in the process before comfortably beating Fewell to put his side one up.
 
Marc Seager was the forced into a reshuffle after defender Josh Maine suffered an injury. Jake Gess came on to fill in at right back, with Michael Adcock moving into the centre to partner Steven Lloyd.
 
Six minutes later and The home side were level after big defender Dean Kearley had upended King on the edge of the area. From the resulting free kick King hit the ball through the wall and aided by a deflection found its way past Kemp.
 
Whitstable went further ahead four minutes later when King put in a superb cross and in trying to deal with it Thamesmead's Tony Gallagher headed the ball past his own keeper and in doing so put Whitstable 2-1 up.

 



On the stroke of half time it beceame 3-1 when the newly signed Sam Denly scored his first goal for the club. From a King corner the ball was finally headed in by Denly from close range after the Thamesmead defence failed to clear their lines.
 
The second half started at a somewhat slower pace due in the main to the heat. However only four minutes had elapsed when Cable reduced the arrears after easily cutting through the Whitstable backline to roll the ball past Fewell to make it 3-2.
 
Andy Constable should have done better on a couple of occasions while Marshall tested Kemp with a shot which he managed to push around the post. Tom Parker was causing problems for the Thamesmead right hand side with his surging runs and from one of these Marcos Perona had shot charged down.
 
Richard Dimmock shot over for Thamesmead and Fewell saved from Cable as the visitors looked for an equaliser. The central defensive pair of Adcock and Lloyd both threw their bodies in to charge down shots as the clock ticked down.
 
Whitstable finally held on to win another Trophy inder the guidance of Marc Seager and with one friendly left to play a new chapter in the clubs history is on the horizon
