Nearly 300 people turned up at Belmont Road to see newly promoted Whitstable Town entertain the newly formed Canterbury City who will be plying their trade in the British Energy Kent County League Division 2 East.Mark Wyer reports:

The game started at quite a high tempo with some strong challenges going in from both sides. Town right back Gary Sayer showing his usual 100% commitment and new signing Danny Tipple looking very effective in the left back position.
The back four was completed with Rob Thomas being partnered by another new signing in the shape of Steven Lloyd who has arrived from Herne Bay.

Neither side really tested either Kevin Fewell or his opposite number Danny Black in the visitors goal although Sayer and Micky Lane both put in a couple of teasing crosses. The home side finally broke the deadlock after 37 minutes when last seasons leading scorer Stuart King beat Black with all the assurance of a top striker.

The second half started with Marc Seager making wholesale changes and the game became rather disjointed. The second goal finally arrived when Sam Prett cleverly rounded Black to put the ball into an empty net. Too visiting manager Dave Fairclough's credit his side never gave up and just minutes later pulled a goal back after some shambolic defending by Whitstable.
An equalizer then arrived after a looping effort saw young Reserve team keeper Justin McVicar  caught flat footed and the efforts of the young City side was rewarded. Two further goals really showed that Canterbury City are back on the football ladder and thoroughly deserved their victory. To cap the result off Steve Marshall blasted a penalty high over the bar after Prett had beeen hauled down in the penalty area.
