As in previous years, the
Kent Football League Premier Division title will be decided in the final week
of the campaign as VCD Athletic achieved a notable League "double" on
Saturday as they beat Whitstable Town, the League leaders, at the Belmont by
the odd goal in three.
The result has left the 'Oystermen' with two games to go
which are both away at Sevenoaks Town, in midweek, and Thamesmead Town next
Saturday whilst VCD Athletic, three points behind, travel to Tunbridge Wells
and then they entertain Deal Town at Oakwood. A large crowd, 450, turned out in
the sunshine to witness Steve Marshall putting the home side in front but their
joy was short-lived as Leroy Huggins responded within a minute. Nine minutes
later, Huggins added his second which sets up an interesting final chapter to
the season. Croydon remain second as they beat Faversham Town at Albert Road,
their final home match of the season, by five goals to one. Lee Kirby, with a
brace, and Ray Freeman put the home side three nil up inside thirteen minutes
before Ian Pullman pulled one back. Marc Whiteman then netted two further goals
in the last eight minutes and their tenth home success of the season.
Thamesmead Town stay fourth when they defeated lowly Erith Town, their first
loss in four outings, by three goals to nil. Ricki Cable netted just before the
break with Curtis Williams and Rob Tarrant completing the scoring. Greenwich
Borough and Hythe Town both enjoyed four nil victories on the road at Lordswood
and Slade Green respectively. At North Dane Way, Meshach Nugent added another
two to his seasons tally with Danny Tipple and Ben Yiadom also on the score
sheet. At the Small Glen, Jason Brazier opened the scoring from the penalty
spot before Roy Godden and a brace from Mike Smissen saw Hythe to their sixth
away success. Sporting Bengal Utd, the bottom side, completed their 2006/07
campaign with a home defeat when they entertained Deal Town at the Mile End
Stadium. John Utterson scored a hat-trick inside eighteen minutes before
Michael Cassar and a brace from Mark Pollard made it six nil at the break.
Utterson added his fourth before Danny Smith netted the last ten minutes from
time and Deal's eighth successive League win on the road. Erith & Belvedere
beat Beckenham Town by the odd goal in five at Park View Road which keeps them
in seventh place. Nick Smith, Matt Johnson and Tom Maycock were on target for
the 'Deres' whilst Jamie Turner and an own goal from Matt Bedford responded for
the visitors. Tunbridge Wells and Herne Bay shared the points in a goalless
draw at the Culverden Stadium.
