Whitstable Town 0 v 2 Erith & Belvedere PDF Print E-mail
by Mark Wyver...Whitstable Town travelled to Park View Road home of Erith & Belvedere to play the hosts who 24 hours earlier had beaten title rivals Croydon 2-0. With home manager Paul Gorman being awarded the Manager of the Month prize The Reds were in for a tough afternoon.

After the 6-1 drubbing of bottom side Sporting Bengal United in their previous game The Reds showed three team changes with Jackson Ohakam, Marcos Perona and Jimmy Strouts returning at the expense of Michael Adcock, Alex Hossick and Marlon Button who all dropped to the bench.

The game started at an end to end pace with home midfielder Austin Berkley pulling the strings in the middle of the park. Home Keeper Alan Hughes looked very assured with his handling and strikers Stuart King and John Akinde were well marshalled by Michael Gonzague and Lee Morgan.

The ever dangerous Adrian Deane and Micky Collins both had efforts saved by Kevin Fewell in the Town goal whilst Rob Thomas produced a saving tackle on Mark Nougher after he had beaten Tom Parker down the left.

Ten minutes into the second half the deadlock was broken when Berkley was brought down in the penalty area and without hesitation the referee awarded a spot kick. Adrian Deane cooly sent Fewell the wrong way to give the Deres the lead.

With their heads down the home side increased their lead when Micky Collins finished superbly after the Town defence had been stretched from a breakaway. At 2-0 down Andy Constable was introduced to the action at the expense of Perona but even  with three strikers chances were few and far between.

The closest the League leaders came to pulling a goal back was when Stuart King saw his free kick bounce back off the bar with Hughes beaten. A poor second half performance by the Reds will need to be put right for the trip to VCD Athletic on Monday afternoon.
