by Mark Wyver: Whitstable Town finally lost their unbeaten Kent
League run after a late 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Greenwich
Borough. After the midweek Kent League Cup success at Hythe
Town the Oystermen went into the game minus top goalscorer Stuart King who
recieved a knee injury during that game.
On loan striker John Akinde came into
the front line to partner Andy Constable.
On a bitterly cold day Whitstable were meeting
their South London opponents for the fifth time this season. A league game along
with a Kent Senior Trophy tie and two Kent League Cup group matches meant that
Marc Seager and his opposite opponent Phil Miles had a good idea about each
others sides.
The Reds started the game in an attacking mode with
Marcos Perona putting in some good balls into the Boro' area. However Constable
and Akinde failed to really test Michael Holder in the Boro' goal.
The best attacking options for Greebwich Borough
were down the flanks with full backs Peter Smith and Danny Tipple both looking
dangerous on their forays forward.
After a goalless first half the game resumed in a
swirling wind and rain with both sets of supporters in good voice. Town lost
Marlon Button with an injury to be replaced by Micky Lane while Chris Hubbard
replaced Smith for the away side.
Neither side looked like they were going to break
the deadlock until Jake Gess was adjudged to have commited a foul in the penalty
area. The 89th minute spot kick from Meshach Nugent beat Kevin Fewell and amid
scenes of jubilation, Greenwich Borough had managed to take three points back
to South East London.
WHITSTABLE TOWN 1. Fewell 2. Adcock 3. Gess 4.
Ohakam 5. Thomas 6. Martin 7. Hossick 8. Perona 9. Akinde 10. Constable 11.
