“Don’t get carried away,” says Town chairman PDF Print E-mail

Picture: left Tony Rouse with Joe Brownett: Whitstable Town chairman Tony Rouse warned against any complacency with almost a third of the season still to go. “Our manager Marc Seager has the player’s feet firmly on the ground, and at Whitstable we always say ‘one game at a time’ which is how our season has progressed so far.

“Our manager Marc Seager has the player’s feet firmly on the ground, and at Whitstable we always say ‘one game at a time’ which is how our season has progressed so far.

“It’s the biggest week so far this season.”

Rouse welcomed the chance to put the league on the back burner with two mouth-watering cup matches at the Belmont inside four days. Town; who are sitting on top of the Kent league will still have one eye on the league results; but their focus will be on progressing in two cups “On Tuesday night we play Faversham in the quarter finals of the Lee Ray Sports cup then on Saturday we entertain West Wickham in the semi final of the Kent Senior Trophy, so the weeks don’t come much bigger than that. We are away in the league to Sevenoaks the following Tuesday, then on the Saturday Faversham return to the Belmont for the Kent League fixture.

It will be like four cup finals inside ten days

With every side striving to be the first side to beat us in cup and league it will be like four cup finals inside ten days and a great test for Marc’s young side. When Marc, my vice chairman Joe Brownett and myself sat down and discussed the season Marc was keen to stress the need for a strong squad as he feels that injuries play such a big part in a wining season. “Even with four top quality strikers I still had to use my contacts and bring in an emergency signing;” said Seager: “We had Steve Marshall, Sam Prett and Andy Constable all out through injury with just Stuart King fit, it’s at times like that you realise that no matter what you plan for something comes along and catches you by surprise. We have been able to keep a steady defence with Kevin Fewell ever present in goal since the first kick of the season, for me he has been one of the biggest plusses so far, that and the way the younger players have matured. We have two of the KL most experience players in Steve Marshall and Jimmy Strouts who have both tasted success in their football careers, they as much as myself and my staff keep the lads feet firmly on the ground.”

The last thing we want is the players believing in their own press, there is a lot of talk around the Kent league clubs saying that the only team who can stop Whitstable Town gaining promotion to the Ryman League; is Whitstable themselves.Well let, me add a word of caution and remind everyone just what position Maidstone were in December last season they were well off the pace, with Beckenham away at the top seemingly with one hand on the title only for Maidstone to pip them to it.”
