… that gives it all it's flavour." Says Peter Albin: Was Cowper referring to the Kent League? I doubt it, but you can't doubt the variety in our constitution as this Saturday Whitstable travel to Sporting Bengal United for our first league encounter of the 2006/7 season. Maybe not the most equal of pairings, but a game that holds it's own fascination. Never a greater mis-match than top versus bottom, and as a spectacle one hopes that you can meet before the die is cast for either side, but here we are. Never a greater mis-match than top versus bottom, and as a spectacle one hopes that you can meet before the die is cast for either side, but here we are. Whitstable will be looking to maintain the ten point gap at the top which they have chiselled out in the new year, using up the three games in hand held earlier and have every incentive to win. Sporting, already out of the reckoning, might even view mid-table as out of reach with twelve points between them and 13th placed Sevenoaks. Town will always be a target from now until they lose the zero in the 'Games Lost' column, if that's not incentive enough for the Bengalis maybe they should join a chess league. Bear in mind that although Whitstable did the double over Sporting in the PDC group, if Town forget to turn up they might just join Erith Town and Faversham as North London scalps, a very rare breed indeed.

An interesting week with the current top three all playing away from home, second place Thamesmead Town at Herne Bay and next on, Croydon are at Faversham Town. Tough games for both sides as our near neighbours show some signs of regaining form, Faversham stopped the slide with a great draw against Hythe Town in their last match the week before last and Herne Bay posted a couple past Vickers last weekend. Mead, however, have bounced back since their loss at the Belmont as have Croydon since their defeat at Bayliss. This is the first league meeting this season for all concerned and they are well matched, great games to watch. Of course I will be accused of bias but I think the home sides will prevail to restore their own pressure on the top six, for the visitors north Kent can be an awful cold place at this time of year, as the Trams found out Tuesday night.

By Saturday VCD could already be in fourth spot and threatening to go one better, as they play Tunbridge Wells at Oakwood later tonight (Weds). They are at home again at the weekend to nearby Slade Green. The loss against Bay last week is now put into perspective as Bay are clearly in the ascendancy, and I expect Vickers to win tonight and on Saturday, unless Fordy's lost his voice that is. Sorry Wells and Green, just not meant to be in these ones.

Tunbridge Wells and Hythe Town travel up the line for games against Beckenham Town and Erith & Belvedere respectively. Wells will have a fair chance of a result at Eden Park with Beckenham showing some indifferent form, with both sides having recorded losses in their last two league matches the result should rekindle the flames for one, in my mind Tunbridge Wells are due some success. Hythe are keeping pace with the top flight and will need to carry on the good work waiting for those ahead to fall back into their reach, and with an ever improving goal difference Croydon are now definitely in the sights. The kick off at PVR is 2.00pm and by 3.40 we will know the degree of the Deres improvement. Based on recent performances I still tip Hythe to be the hungrier. Away win.

Sevenoaks travel to Lordswood for a battle over twelfth spot, Oaks currently behind by two points won the home game 3-1 back in September and have faded slightly since then. Lordswood haven't won in their last five (D1 L4) and Oaks haven't won away from Greatness in the last four outings. Time for Lords to refind winning ways with home turf working in their favour.

Deal Town host Erith Town the east coast side will be favourites to win over the Dockers who have only recorded two wins and two draws this season. Three points for Deal will position them well within the mid-table grouping, a poor season by their own high standard and the games are fast running out to climb much farther.

Finally for the Premier League, Greenwich Borough do not have a game.

Habitual Belmonteers will be happy to hear that the Reserves are playing at home saturday afternoon against Ashford Town Reserves in the KFL Division One.

Wherever you watch your football, enjoy it to the full!

Come on you Reds!
