On recent form Whitstable just have the edge with fourteen points from the last six league games against Mead's twelve, the Belmont side recording two draws, Greenwich Borough on Tuesday, and against Lordswood back in mid-November while Mead dropped the points at VCD and at home against Slade Green. The two sides have also scored 82 league goals along the way, with contributions from 'KL hotshots' Stuart King (Whitstable) and Ricki Cable (Thamesmead) ably supported by Steve Marshall (W), Andy Constable (W), Curtis Williams (T) and Mead's recent acquisition Ross Cable. If you have never been to the Belmont to witness a Kent League game I strongly recommend this match it should be just about as entertaining as they come. With no football at Faversham or Herne Bay there should also be a good crowd and a great atmosphere. It all kicks off at three o'clock, see you there in the crowd.
Elsewhere, Croydon are finding some terrific form with seven wins in a row, they will be happy whatever the result at the Belmont ground, providing they can overcome their visitors, Lordswood. Form says they should take the three points, Lords are having an indifferent season but will always lift their game against the 'better' opposition. A win for the Trams will put them within at least three points of the top two, points for Lordswood could elevate them to seventh, up three places. Enough incentive for both sides to make for an intriguing game. My tip? I think Croydon have the ambition and confidence to be challenging for the KL title at season's end and will beat Lordwood with a comfortable margin.
Fourth placed VCD Athletic travel to Erith Town for a Thames gateway derby, Vickers beat the Dockers three-nil in October and will be up for the double against their close neighbours. Erith, currently at the foot of the table, never play that bad against us yet they're still waiting for their first home win in this their ninth home match. Looks cut and dried then, a Vickers win, but let's not forget "It's a funny ol' game" derby football.
Greenwich Borough look comfortable in fifth, and still in touch with the leaders they are having a great season. They are host to Deal Town on Saturday, a side with a less than flattering record this year. Deal like to take the game to the opposition and a recent improvement in form will prove them tough to beat, a good win against the Deres last time out. A tight but totally entertaining match should ensue, with Boro' just nicking the points. I thought they had some good support at Harrow Meadow Tuesday night and the team's comparitive success this year has raised some interest in the local fans, if your in the area turn out for them they really deserve the support.
A big game for Hythe at home against Tunbridge Wells three points will keep them 'in the same street' as the top five with all to play for. Currently situated in the no-mans land between upper and middle table to drop any more points might open the divide and leave them too much to recover in the other fifteen games that remain. A surprising 3-1 loss at Herne Bay on Tuesday evening saw the Blues climb to within three points of Hythe in seventh and the Reds lose ground on Boro'. Wells have shown great spirit in the recent matches against Whitstable and have hauled themselves off last place to fifteenth, mid-table ought to be within their reach as the season progresses, they have games in hand on most other sides.
Sevenoaks are visited by Erith & Belvedere, another evenly matched encounter. Oaks are just three points and two league places behind the Deres with two games in hand. The two teams are having reversals of fortune with Sevenoak's form dipping while E&B's has been showing signs of recovery. Their manager Paul Gorman picked up the manager's award for December and they promptly lost the next game one-nil at home versus Deal. Whether that was just a blip will be borne out at the weekend, Sevenoaks are a good test this year having beat the likes of Deal and Lordswood but I expect Erith & Belvedere to extend their league run to four wins away from PVR. Note: All without conceding a goal.
Beckenham Town travel to Sporting Bengal United for the customary three points. Much to the delight of the Becks fans who haven't won away from home for six matches. Strangely worse than Sporting's home record having not won for just the last five. Just an accident of fate though, I'm afraid, as the Bengalis have lost the last three homes without finding the net themselves and lost the last six home and away straight. A cakewalk for the Reds.
Faversham have no scheduled fixture and unlucky Herne Bay find themselves with yet another blank Saturday as their opponents, Slade Green, have to play their postponed Kent Senior Trophy tie at Bearsted.
Also, weather permitting, the Ressies have a Division 1 game at Thamesmead. If you happen to be visiting Auntie up the line on Saturday why not pop out for some fresh air and show our trusty reserves some support, they currently lie fourth and might move to third with a win.
Wherever you watch your football, enjoy it to the full!
Come on you Reds!
