PREMIER DIVISION REVIEW The high
winds and driving rain which swept through the County was responsible for three
Kent Football League Premier Division matches being abandoned. In those games
that survived, Thamesmead Town went back to the top, on goal difference, as
they defeated Greenwich Borough at home by three goals to one. After two
successive defeats, the home side went in front through a Ross Cable strike in
the first period. Curtis Williams doubled the lead, in the second half, before
Dave Hassett reduced the arrears.
Cable then netted his second to complete
Thamesmead's twelfth win of the campaign and condemn Greenwich to their first
League defeat on the road. Croydon remain in third place after their three nil
victory at Slade Green, their seventh consecutive League success. Neil John and
Mark Whiteman netted in the first half before Ryan Watts scored the third right
on time. In the early kick off at Eden Park Avenue, Beckenham Town beat Erith
Town, by the odd goal in three to move up to seventh in the table. Ashley
Carew, in the first half, and Steve McKenzie were on target for the 'Becks',
Alan Hanlon scored Erith's consolation goal. At Salters Lane, Herne Bay
completed a League "double" over Faversham Town, in front of the days
best attendance, 235, when they won by three goals to nil. Aaron Firth netted a
brace, one in each half, and Sam Denly was also on target for the visitors. The
abandoned matches included the Deal Town home match with Whitstable Town,
League leaders at the start of the day. The game was delicately poised at one
each, Tom Martin had put Deal in front with an own goal before Jake Gess
replied for the Oystermen. Lordswood and Hythe Town were goalless when the
referee called a halt to the proceedings. At Oakwood, the visitors, Erith &
Belvedere, were leading VCD Athletic through a Nicky Collins first half stirke
but the weather had the final say. Ironically, their previous encounter, just
before Christmas in the London Senior Cup, was also abandoned, a case of
