Picture Steve Marshall: A Steve Marshall strike in the 87th minute was enough to cement Whitstable’s position on top of the Kent League with 38 points after a hard fought 1-0 win away to local rivals Herne Bay. Town have two games in hand over second placed Thamesmead who are three points behind on 35. The win stretches Marc Seager’s sides unbeaten run to 14 games, their only defeats in all matches so far this season came in the FA Cup losing to Margate and the FA Vase when they lost to Oakwood.
Whitstable manager Seager saying; “We are definitely not getting carried away with ourselves, I know that we have won nothing yet and it’s still a very long way to the end of the season. Sure we are the side everyone want
s to beat and I keep telling the lads that any team we play will always lift their game. That the way it is in football; everyone wants to beat the team in form. Today we came out on top in a hard fought local derby game, it was not pretty football but we maintained our concentration levels and stayed patient and in the end we got the result.” Picture: WTFC manager Marc Seager
“That was a massive result,” Whitstable coach Simon Halsey said after the game. “Make no mistake today was one of those games that can shape a whole season, all the other sides were looking at us today and once again the lads have come through. Another win, another three points keeps the pressure on all the teams around us. We have another hard game on Saturday when we travel to Deal and we will be approaching this just the same as every game, our focus now is on Saturday and the next match against Deal, nothing else.” |
