Match report by Mark Wyver... Whitstable travelled to Tunbridge Wells on Saturday for another important Kent League Premier Division fixture. The home side under the guidance of Martin Farnie have only won one game in the league this season but look a far better side than their position suggests. The Oystermen started brightly and tried to play football on the Culdverden Stadium pitch which was almost impossible.
Last weeks two goal hero Sam Prett tested former Whitstable goalkeeper Jimmy Simpson early on before he again came to the rescue for The Wells with saves from Stuart King and Marlon Button.

It was the home side who broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when the Referee awarded a penalty for handball in penalty area. Home defender Adrian Hatcher cooly stepped up to send Kevin Fewell the wrong way to put Tunbridge Wells 1-0 up. Disaster struck the home side after the goal when after a through ball from Jimmy Strouts home keeper Simpson was innocently caught by Marcos Perona. After a few minutes of treatment Simpson was helped from the pitch to be replaced by 56 year old former Bromley and Welling Goalkeeper Alan Rogers. Despite this setback the home side held out until half time leading 1-0.

The second half started at a rather slow pace with Wells defenders Ben Hilden and Adrian Hatcher looking solid throughout. It took the promotion challengers until the 61st minute to finally beat the veteran Rogers when after receiving the ball, striker King slipped the ball past the keeper and in to the net. At this stage the Whitstable supporters were urging their side forward and with fifteen minutes left on the clock Marlon Button picked the ball up on the left hand side of the area and curled a superb shot over the outstretched Rogers and into the back of the net.

Tunbridge Wells still caused the Whitstable back four a few anxious moments with substitute Gary Sayer making a last ditch saving tackle. With injury time now being played the visitors made sure of the three points when King notched his second of the afternoon an despite Wells having what some people thought was a goal ruled out it was Marc Seager's side who gained another three points and are now only second on goal difference to Thamesmead Town with three games in hand.
