Town enjoy mud bath as unbeaten run continues PDF Print E-mail
Picture: WTFC captain Marcos Perona: Whitstable Town entertained Sevenoaks Town in the Kent League on saturday. The visitors arrived having won five of their twelve league games while the home side were striving to keep their unbeaten run intact. The home side with Jimmy Strouts making his full debut for the club were looking dangerous when going forward and the visitors were indebted to goalkeeper Lee Friend for making two excellent early saves.
Picture: Stuart King who created plenty of chances without scoring when he came on:
It was however home custodian Kevin Fewell who made the best stop when tipping over a header while home striker Steve Marshall hit the post for the home side in an entertaining first half.

It took just a minute of the second half for Marc Seager's side to break the deadlock when Sam Prett finished from close range after a goalmouth melee. To the visitors credit it took them only eight minutes to draw level when former Dartford and Erith player Matt Fagan netted after being allowed time and space in the box.

Picture: Sam Preet who netted twice for Town: Whitstable continued to create chances and regained the lead on 64 minutes when right back Gary Carter fired home for his first goal for the club. This goal seemed to give the Reds confidence and just three minutes later Marcos Perona netted the third goal.

The three points were secured in the 76th minute when striker Prett scored his second of the afternoon to complete a 4-1 victory which sees The Reds move to within three points of leaders Thamesmead with three games in hand.

Rightly congratulated by his team mates...

Additional reporting by Tony Rouse:
It would be churlish to imply that the Belmont pitch was a mud bath, it was however very heavy and as the game wore on began to cut up after heavy rain overnight and the morning of the match. Due in part to the rain but also as the pitch had been ‘scraped’ during the week, a process which using a special machine aireates the ground to aid draining and lets air into the top surface of the pitch.
Whitstable coped well on the surface and looked by far the stronger of the two sides at the finish, going someway to dispel the myth that as a side which likes to play football Whitstable would get found out when the pitches were less than perfect. In a game that was played mainly in midfield, both sides opting to overload the miidle of the park, both side were open to swift counter attacks, in a good contest which as the game wore on Whitstable could have won by a much greater margin.
Against Sevenoaks, a side that were the early season pace setters and one who most certainly will finish in the top half of the table this was a well crafted victory against tough opposition.
