Whitstable Town 2 v Slade Green 1 match report from Mark Wyver PDF Print E-mail
Whitstable Town 2 v Slade Green 1...After an early morning pitch inspection Whitstable welcomed Slade Green to Belmont Road for a Kent League Premier Division fixture. The visitors had previously won only one league game before their trip to their unbeaten hosts. The visitors therefore stunned the home crowd after just two minutes, striker John Paul McKey ran through unchallenged to finish cooly past Kevin Fewell in the home goal. Chances were at a premium after this,  with Slade Green being well marshalled at the back by the experienced former Bromley defender Andy Silk while the home sides approach play seemed below par due to the heavy conditions.

The Reds continued to press with wide men Jake Gess and Marlon Button putting in some telling crosses none of which could be finished off by Steve Marshall or Sam Prett, while defender Rob Thomas headed over from a Marcos Perona corner.Visiting keeper John Paul Green also dealt with anything that came his way.

The second half saw Whitstable dominate possession which saw a header from Prett brilliantly tipped onto the post by Green whilst Gary Carter put in a telling cross which came to nothing.Home manager Marc Seager then decided to throw young striker Stuart King and new signing Jimmy Strouts who has signed from Maidstone into the fray at the expense of Tom Parker and Prett.

This proved to be an inspired change for in the 73rd minute King picked up the ball outside the penalty box and after riding the challenges of the Slade Green defenders he drilled a low bouncing shot which beat Green and nestled in the corner of the net. Many supporters were thinking a point was better than a first league defeat when Marc Seager's side showed their never say die attitude.

With the clock ticking onto the 90th minute former Slade Green midfielder Perona crossed from the right and after a melee in the area that man for the occasion Steve Marshall claimed the last touch as the ball went in the net.The referee who had sent Josh Maine off late in the game for two bookings then blew the final whistle and The Reds had moved into second place in the Kent League table.
