Marlon Button Whitstable Town welcomed Greenwich Borough to Belmont Road in the 2nd Round of the Kent Senior Trophy on Saturday.After last weeks 1-1 draw with Lordswood in the Kent League the home side made three changes to the starting line up.
Tom Parker and Alex Hossick were both ruled out through suspension to be replaced by Gary Carter and Marlon Button while Sam Prett came in for Andy Constable who dropped to the bench
Marc Seager's side soon got into their stride and Steve Marshall had an early shot well saved by Borough keeper Michael Holder in the Borough goal.It took just three minutes for the Reds to take the lead when after some slick passing down the right hand side a cross from Marlon Button was headed home by towering centre half Josh Maine.The home side continued to play some of their best football of the season and were rewarded with a second goal on 24 minutes.
 
After receiving the ball on the left hand side striker Sam Prett struck a sweet left foot shot from 20 yards which beat Holder and nestled in the back of the net to put Whitstable into a 2-0 lead.The visitors came back into the game and home keeper Kevin Fewell went down bravely at the feet of Meshach Nugent an incident that saw both sides piling into what looked more like a scene from a Rugby match.The referee sorted the melee out with the help of his linesman and the game continued with Whitstable having two players booked along with one from Greenwich Borough.
 
The home supporters in a crowd of 146 were treated to a third goal in the 42 minute when young midielder Jake Gess hit a shot from distance which was again to perfectly placed for Holder to get near to and the Reds went in 3-0 up after playing some football which would have graced a higher league.
 
After the break Greenwich Borough stepped up their game and with nothing to lose they made Whitstable look quite ordinary with Dave Hassett always looking dangerous in their attack.After the earlier incident involving Kevin Fewell the home management decided to replace the former Chatham and Sittingbourne keeper with veteran Mark Lane who came on for his first appearance since the away game at Tunbridge Wells last season
 
It was in the 74th minute when Lane was beaten after Hussain Budak shot past the unsighted keeper to put Greenwich back into the game.The visitors continued to press and in the 89th minute Duane Moncrieff made it 3-2.The Reds managed to hold onto their lead in what can only be described as a game of two halves and will now be at home to either Tunbridge Wells or Hollands & Blair in the next round.
