Whitstable Town welcomed Croydon to Belmont Road on Saturday in their final Kent League Cup Group C Qualifying game.Town manager Marc Seager made two changes from the side that started at Sporting Bengal with Lee Jones and Alex Hossick coming in for Tom Parker and Jake Gess.
On a chilly november afternoon the game started on a very low key with passes going astray from both sides. It was the visitors who created the best chances with Matt Fowler, Neil John and Lee Kirby all going close without really troubling goalkeeper Kevin Fewell. The home side gradually started to take their grip on the game and efforts from Stuart King and Andy Constable were hit high and wide while Marlon Button tested former Bromley goalkeeper Danny Harwood with a long range shot. The game drew to its half time conclusion with the score a rather drab 0-0.
The second half started under darkening skies and with the sound of fireworks going off although this certainly was not a cracker. The game continued in the same manner as the first with both midfields cancelling each other out. Then came the breakthrough after 68 minuites when striker Stuart King went on a mazy run only to be pulled back by defender Ollie Young on the edge of the box. With the majority of people in the ground expecting a red card to be shown to Young it was only a yellow that was brandished by referee Mr Cole.King then preceded to take the free kick himself and curled it delightfully over the wall and past Harwood who seemed to be unsighted as he reacted slowly in going down for the ball.
The home side thaught they had scored a second when a superb move ended in Andy Constable thumping the ball past Harwood only for the referee's assistant to have his flag up for offside against the big striker. It looked as though the Reds would hold out for the 1-0 win when after the ball was not cleared properly by the home defence visiting midfielder Lee Kirby struck a sweet shot past Fewell which was almost the last kick of the game. With this result it means Marc Seager's men win Group C and will now have home advantage in the Quarter Finals.
