Winter draws on!
Peter Albin looks ahead to the weekends fixtures
On Saturday Whitstable Town's opposition at the Belmont are Erith and Belvedere. So far this term they haven't looked the side that slugged it out with us in the league last season. But nevertheless showing signs of recovery lately, with a couple of good wins this week in the FA Vase and the London Senior Cup. This is the first league game for the Oystermen for a couple of weeks, I don't think anyone at the club would have hoped we would still top the table after our recent cup distractions. In case you forgot, we are looking to extend a straight run of six consecutive wins in the league. Reading the Deres match reports this is not going to be easy this weekend and the match promises to be really competitive, like us they prefer to play football on the floor. They beat us by a couple of goals last year it'd be nice to think we can repay them with interest. Promises to be a good home crowd, come down and add to the atmosphere if you can and watch out for their in form danger man Steve White.

Poised to take advantage of any slip ups at Whitstable are Thamesmead Town, Beckenham Town and Faversham Town who are all scheduled to play away from home this weekend.

Mead travel to Sevenoaks Town, who I did a disservice to last week by predicting they'd lose their Vase game, apologies. A renascent Oaks are playing with confidence at home this season and their visitors will have to be on top form to come away with more than a point. Beckenham are playing at Slade Green who are a better side than their one win in six starts would suggest. They were 4-1 winners in their last league game at the Small Glen and so Becks, like Thamesmead, will have to be in top gear to get any reward, probably a point each. Our close neighbours Faversham have another difficult match, this time up at Erith Town. Yet another team who have had a poor start to the season, with one victory in eight, which doesn't reflect their capability. Some good cup results recently might inject the confidence to kick start their league campaign. I envisage another drawn match at the Erith Sports Stadium. Three score draws? Shame their not on the pools coupon.

In the chasing pack below those three and on equal points with Sevenoaks are VCD Athletic, Greenwich Borough and Hythe Town. In a strange twist of fate all three of these sides are also playing away fixtures on Saturday. Vickers roam across the Thames to Sporting Bengal United, whose performances have been lacking in recent weekend fixtures. Fordy's boys are favourites to win, 'nuff said! Borough travel east the length of the county to Deal Town. Deal are in danger of losing touch with the leading group with only two wins this year while their visitors are doing rather well year on year. Never an easy ground to play at a draw would be a great result for Boro'. Meanwhile, Hythe will be hacking across kent in the opposite direction as they play at Croydon. Lying eighth and ninth in the table both sides would relish the points to maintain pressure on the top four. Croydon have a P3 W1 D1 record at home and Hythe have played four on the road, losing at top sides Beckenham, Greenwich and Whitstable and drawing at Deal, not convincing evidence for poor performance. Hythe could collect the points but once again I'm backing the draw!

Lordswood, currently 13th, host bottom side Tunbridge Wells who are looking for their first win. Lords are a bit hit or miss this season and might fail to lift themselves for this game, I really fancy Wells, against current league form, to turn them over.

In Division 1 the Whitstable Town Reserves travel to Erith & Belvedere.

There are four more Premier fixtures next Tuesday, October 17th, that I should tell you about as Herne Bay travel to Deal Town, Lordswood play at Erith & Belvedere, Sevenoaks run up the line to Greenwich Borough and Faversham are away to Hythe town.

Wherever you watch your football, enjoy it to the full!

Come on you Reds! Peter Albin 11/10/06
