Deal Town 4 v Whitstable Town 5: Kent Senior Trophy (First Round)
Saturday 7th  October 2006   ?Jackson?s High Five?
After the explosive league game less than at month ago that finished in a nine goal feast at the Belmont ended 5-4 to Whitstable; the odds were heavily in favour of goals, and lots of them in this league cup encounter. But what odds would have been on offer for the game to end in the same scoreline with Deal taking the lead inside five minutes just as they did in the first match.

As they say, never predict anything in football, especially the score.

Deal?s Adam Covey's fifth minute strike past Whitstable keeper Kevin Fewell after his poor clearance, owed much to the good work of Mark Pollard whose great run from the by-line into Whitstable?s penalty box went unchallenged, Pollard?s neat lay off left Covey the simplest of tap-ins to set the cup tie alight. Town responded after Deal's own keeper, Rob Lindley's attempted punch felt to Mickey Lane his neat lay off to Steve Marshall still needed to be worked, Marshall shrugging off two defenders to loop the ball over the last man on the line to level the score in the 12th minute.

Three minutes later Marshall netted his second with Whitstable playing some neat passing football, Marshall finishing well. The visitors then took a firm grip on the game with the hard working Andy Constable scoring their third after good work by Jake Gess who won a 50/50 ball to set up Constable, he slotted the ball past Lindley in the 25th minute to make it 3-1 to the Whitstable. Five minutes later it should have been four, Deal keeper Lindley and two of his defenders combing to save well from Marshall, when Whitstable?s striker was through on goal.

Ten minutes later Deal should have pulled one back, Fewell saving well from Michael Cassar after Tom Parker had been harshly adjudged to have fouled Jake Collins.

On the right flank for Whitstable?s Mickey Lane up against his old club; fired in a great ball, Constable admitting to his manager Marc Seager after the game he should have done better with Lane?s cross, his header from just inside of the box flashed wide. Minutes later the same combination set up this time by Gess after his good work on the left again missed the target, Constable heading over Lindley?s crossbar.

Half Time: Deal Town 1 v Whitstable Town 3

Any thoughts Whitstable had of extending their lead were wiped out within three minutes of the restart, Pollard scoring unopposed with a neat far post 48th minute header whilst Whitstable heads still seemed locked in the dressing room. Whitstable responded within two minutes, Lane going on a great run looking to lay the ball off, before continuing and firing in a great shot off the inside of Lindley?s far post. With the score now at 4-2 to the visitors Whitstable?s travelling faithful with memorys of the last encounter were chanting. ?We?re go?na win 5-4?.

In the 57th minute Deal hopes were further raised at 4-3 when Covey scored his second with Town?s defence going ?walk about?. Then the evergreen Pollard rose unchallenged for the second time of the afternoon to level the scores at four goals apiece. Tow rang the changes, Darren Budge coming on for Lane, with Jackson replacing Maine, both sides having chances before the ref indicated the end of 90 minutes, extra time to be played.

The game; so far could be summed up thus: Deal were second best in the first 45 minutes, Whitstable were most certainly off the pace in the second, with another 30 minutes to decide the tie.

Stuart King replaced marshal as both sides had chances in the first 15 of extra time to settle the match. Constable, whose work rate throughout was first class, was unlucky to see his fierce shot strike the outside of Lindley?s upright. And Budge combining with Constable was clearly onside when he slotted past Lindley, the ref let down not for the first time during the game by his linesman.

Jackson celebrates
The introduction of Jackson
Ohakam had steadied Whitstable at the back, the home side started to look a little leg weary as Whitstable pressed, still Fewell needed to be at his best to deny Deal?s Pollard his third, Fewell pulling off a good save. Deal should have been down to ten men; King hauled over when on a direct run towards Lindley?s goal, the ref letting all the players down by not following the letter of the law.

In the second period of extra time Whitstable looked the stronger, and when Jackson scored the goal of the game in the 101st minute, his first time volley from nearly 25 yards fizzing into the roof of Lindsey?s net; the young Nigerian midair forward roll and back flip was a celebration to savour.

?If you want the truth,? Whitstable?s manager Marc Seager said after the match. ?I am delighted that we are into the next round of the cup, we have beaten a good side in Deal but to let a three-one lead at half time slip to a four-all at 90 minutes was not good. Mind, Jackson showed great footwork with his goal, it was a quality strike and he deserves much credit for the way he sat on the bench although he desperately wanted to play for the full 90 minutes. But there was no fuss and then he came on delivered the goods. I am delighted for the lad.?
