Managers top marks for Town  Guildford City 0 Whitstable Town 1? Extra preliminary round F. A. CUP ?Shane Davis had a great game at left back,? said WTFC manager Marc Seager, ?As did Josh Maine, he adds that bit of bite to the side which is so important when you come up against sides that we know little about, he stops them playing and is learning with every game. Young ?Kingy? (Stuart King) worked hard and took his goal well; Jake Gess did well when he came on, as did Sam Prett until Steve Marshall replaced him.

Whitstable keeper Kevin Fewell never had an outright save to make throughout the game, which was down to his good positional play a solid defence in front of him. Rob Thomas when he came on after Josh took a bad knock was up to the pace of the game at once; he made a vital tackle towards the end as Guildford threw everyone forward.   ?I asked the boys to play a different way today, football that is not for the purist, on a pitch that looked good from the stands but believe me it was awful to play on. We wanted a result today and the lads delivered, I am very pleased that we never coneeded, just look at the list of results in the papers tomorrow, you won?t see many clean sheets in the F.A. Cup you mark my words.? Said Seager

mosimage}A 66th minute Stuart King strike was enough to see Town through into the next round of the F.A. Cup against Guildford City. The once glorious City playing their first Cup game for almost 30 years offered a spirited, if some what shot shy, opposition to Marc Seager?s side who although dominate for most of the match were unable to play their usual passing game; due in part to the rutted bouncy pitch. Seager saying: ?The pitch has been used throughout the summer for athletics and three weeks ago they were throwing the discus and shot putting where we played football, hardly the sort of surface we are used to at the Belmont. That said, they were terrific host, and both sides tried to play football, and although it was not a spectacle we are in the next round of the F.A. Cup and I am very pleased.?  The home sides ploy of early balls wide to Aneel Azeem, playing wide on the left, created the home sides best chances early on, them for some unexplainable reason Azeem seem to sit back and hardly ever ventured into Whitstable territory after the first twenty minutes.

With both side competitive on an unforgiving pitch the only attempts on goal came from Town, King netting after 10 minutes, his efforts ruled offside. Sam Prett had the best chance of the first half forcing young keeper Arjuna Adlam to make a great save low down to his left when all in the ground were shouting goal. Prett and King prowled but apart form a couple of reverse balls, one for Macros Perona, the other from Mickey Lane setting up Prett, Town failed to open up the home side. Long range shots from Alex Hossick and Perona failed to test Adlam and the first half finished 0-0 with Town keeper Fewell hardly touching the ball.

The second half was much of the same, Towns defensively strong with the game played out mainly in midfield with goal chances, although few were all coming from the visitors. Guildford?s star striker Ross Murry was unable to better either Maine or Michael Adcock and the home side became increasingly frustrated. They had a couple of players names enter the referee?s book for  niggling fouls, as did Whitstable?s Perona and Hossick, both for seemingly late tackles.

The luckiest man on the pitch was Josh Maine who over-reacted when deliberately fouled he rushed up to the Guildford player and charged him to the ground with his shoulder right in front of the referee, lucky in the sense he only received a yellow when a flashed red could have easily been the result. ?I have apologised to Seager,? Maine said after the game, ?it?s a part of my game that I thought I?d moved on from, the management have stressed that we need to keep eleven players on the pitch and what I did was silly, I said I was sorry to Marc and the lads hope that?s the end of it.?

With about twenty minutes of the second half played, Gess linked well with King to open up the left side of Guildford defence, Gess laying in a peach of a ball for King to strike low and hard past Adlam in the 66th minute. Steve Marshall replaced Prett; Thomas replaced Maine who took a bad knock to the knee as Whitstable pressed for another goal. With the time fast running out the home side threw everyone forward but Town?s defence held firm. Fewell, a few corners aside still not called upon to make a worthwhile save as Whitstable looked forward to a trip to Bedfont in the next round.
