Kentish Observer Premier League Sat 3rd Sept 2005: As the first half progressed VCD, driven on by their skipper Paul Foley started to make a game of it whilst at the back for Whitstable his opposite number Andy Keir was solid alongside Adcock in the centre of defence. The visitor?s manager Marc Seager elected to start without Andy Constable and Shane Davies, young Tom Parker stepping in for Davies, Aaron Knight in for Constable, they both had a solid game. VCD are a tough physical side and Whitstable needed to up for the game to match them in all areas of the pitch, the livery Lee Coburn and Clayton Probets; always ready to run onto balls flighted over the top, Keir and Adcock moping up before they could threaten Brown?s goal. Whitstable scored their second with less than two minutes remaining of the first half, the bustling Gary Sayer for Whitstable chasing to win a 50/50 ball then set up Sam Prett with a delightful cross, Prett finishing well. With the exception of a couple of corner when VCD looked dangerous through Foley, Whitstable?s defence coped without undue alarm.
With the slope in their favour and manager Andy Ford?s half time team talk still ringing in the ears the home side came out with more purpose. Coburn and Probets both testing Brown with long range shots before Foley made his mark, first to the ball from a corner his unchallenged header flashed wide of Brown?s goal but stayed in play. The clever overheads kick by Ashley Probets on the edge of Whitstable?s area found the unmarked Foley, who headed past Brown at 2-1. This gave the home side new vigour and they had their best spell of the game, Ashley Probets drawing Whitstable keeper Brown after a good run into the area, his snap shot cannoning off Brown?s upright. The miss seemed to wake Town up just as much as it had lifted the home side, Whitstable?s Knight going on a great run halted only by a hefty double challenge ten yards from VCD?s area. Seager stepped up to take the resulting free kick, he shaped to float the ball far post, instead drilling in low and hard to O?Connor?s near port, the young keeper spilling the ball, Prett nipping in to score his second of the game and give Whitstable back their two goal lead in the 62nd minute. Substations upset the rhythm of the remainder of the game, the home side using all their three subs, for Whitstable Seager coming off after taking a knock to be replaced by Shane Davies. Davies went into Tom Parker?s position at left back, Parker slotting in for Seager in midfield alongside Marcus Perona. Prett was in one-on-one with the keeper who made a good save to deny the young striker his third goal. Andy Constable and Wayne Barrett replaced Stuart Harrison and Prett, Constable linking up in the attack with Steve Marshall who had a battling encounter with Foley who were at each other the whole game. Constable went close; and both Marshall and Knight had a couple of good chances as Town ran out 3-1 winners. |
