?Physical, strong and well organised ? was how coach Simon Halsey described Ramsgate who entertained Whitstable Town in a pre season friendly last night, beating Town 2-1 in a tightly fought game.? Until they scored? said Halsey, ?there was nothing in it I though we battled as well as they did. It was exactly the type of working over the lads needed. We will come up against these strong tough sides and that?s just what Ramsgate are, Jim Ward always has his side fit and demands a certain style of play from them, it was hard game.?

There was little to choose between the sides until midway through the first half a slip by a defender allowed the strong ?Rams? forward to power into the area, his firm shot low past young keeper Robert French was nearly saved but ended up in the net much to the delight of Ramsgate supporters. The home side pushed on looking to add to the scoreline, young French needed to be at his best to keep the score 1-0 at the interval.

After the break, with Whitstable playing a complety-changed side, which won so impressively against Horsham YM on Tuesday evening, a little off the pace. French again called upon to make some good saves whilst at the other end Town strikers Andy Constable and Stuart King struggled to find any space against a strong back line. With Whitstable slowly getting back into the game, the linesman signalled penalty for a less than robust challenge against the ?Rams? forward, given this was a friendly and indeed the rough stuff that preceded it seemed harsh in the extreme. Constable taking issue with the linesman then asked to be substituted by the ref, which in many ways spoilt the evening.

French beat away the spot kick but was unable to save the follow up. At 2-0 both sides made changes, Marcos Perona on in midfield and it was Perona who gave the score line a measure of respectability, slotting into the net after the ?Rams? keeper failed to gatherer a cross cleanly. ?I was on hand to knock it in,? Perona said, ?it was a tough game but we all enjoyed it its just what we needed with the first league game 10 days away.?
