picture Tommy Samson & John Suter...Pre-season friendly Whitstable Town 0 Horsham YMCA 1 30th July 2005: At the Belmont Ground: By the final whistle the visitor’s manager, John Suter was by far the happier of the two managers; Town’s Matt Toms could hardly contain his frustration at his side’s inability to get on the score sheet. “Difficult to pinpoint why we were so flat today, I could say it was the late start, 3-30 kick off when we had the lads ready for or normal time, but that masks what was a poor performance by the standards we have set ourselves at Whitstable. All I can say, if that’s our one poor game of the season, them I’m glad we have it out of the way before the league starts in two weeks time. We did not defend at a corner and that was their only real chance of the first half, sure our keeper Mark Brown needed to make decent save just before that but we never got into areas where we could hurt them, it was very disappointing all round.”
![]() Both side relished the conditions; a nice lush Belmont surface creased by intermittent showers before, and during the game laid the basis for a good contest between two good foot-balling sides. The visitors lived up to their billing; Whitstable fell far short of expectations all over the pitch, too many times putting them-selves under pressure when a steady foot on the ball was needed. Town had a couple of early chances before the visitors scored the games only goal from a neat corner, when Town’s defence failed to pick up the incoming player whose perfectly time header was slotted beyond Brown to settled the game. Both sides huffed and puffed, but there was little for the home side to cheer until Whitstable seemed to find their rhythm with just over ten minutes remaining in the game. Chances fell to Aaron Knight and Steve Marshall to level the score but the visitors defence, well marshalled by their keeper held firm against Whitstable’s late rally. “ A decent foot-balling side and a nice bunch of officials and supporters” was how one Whitstable regular described Horsham ‘YM’, “we should go down to them next year for a pre-season and give a better account of ourselves.” Which just about summed up the day. |
