“Two minute burst kills off Ilford...”Prett and Colenutt hit form… Ilford 1 Whitstable Town 2 Whitstable Saturday, 6th August 2005: The Ilford pitch looked lush and green, and certainly flat and true from sidelines, ‘the pitch must be rock hard’ said one of the supporters, as both sides seemed to deal with the ball as if it were a hot potato. Long balls bounced way too high and the ball seemed at times to take on a life of its own. “It’s the leagues new match ball’ ball said one of the Ilford staff, ‘it seems a bit bouncy and moves about a bit, it’s the first time we’ve used it.’,But the ball had nothing to do with the way Whitstable played the first 45 minutes, not that they were unorganised by any standards, just the delivery to the forwards in the final 20 to 25 yards was over hit with alarming regularity, either too hard or to high. Town’s best moves coming via Darren Budge wide on the right combining with Gary Sayer, or Paul Colenutt on the left, backed up by the ever improving, Tom Parker. When Town played the ball out wide Ilford were stretched, the only time their defence was troubled was by balls whipped in from the flanks for the lively Sam Prett and Aaron Knight. If ever there was a player who has ‘grown into a man’ over the closed season it is Knight.
